The FReeper Canteen Presents...
Happy Labor Day!

H I S T O R Y |
Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival. It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day. The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism. In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday. Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries. |
For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder. |

So what about you? How are you celebrating Labor Day?
Please remember that The Canteen is here to support and entertain our troops and veterans and their families, and is family friendly.

Yes, he has. But he’s pretty cool about it overall. He’ll fuss a little but doesn’t really want to fight. Just wants them to leave his special spots alone.
When he first showed up, he crouched in the yard and just screamed his lungs out, ears flat back. I actually told Hubby he might need to shoot him because I thought there was something wrong with him. But then I started thinking he wasn’t angry or mean .... he was terrified. He must have been an inside cat before he was dumped here and was scared out of his mind.
Turns out that was the case and after a little while, he settled down. We kept the others inside and I made sure there was plenty of food and water outside for him.
He’s now one of the sweetest cats here.

I hate people who can do that to an animal that trusts and loves them and doesn’t know what it did wrong.
i’m glad Percy and the others were lucky enough to find you!

I hate it too. I’m just glad I went with my gut on his behavior. We didn’t know if he was rabid, just mean, or what. We’d never heard a cat scream like that before.
He knows his name is Percy but he also knows his other name is Mr. Wonderful because I call him that a lot. He knows he’s loved here.

They’ve gone south, and I’m alone today and tomorrow. Substitute Patty was here yesterday and we could have used a third. I had to have my sister call twice to bring her down. I’ve been in and out all day. I’m tired and ready to head to bed. I hope she’s down for the count tonight, but I hear coughing, which isn’t good.

Yes, I saw your later post about it and my heart sank. Sorry she’s gotten I such a bad way this weekend. I’m glad you had help yesterday, at least.
I take it the coughing just started this evening? Doesn’t sound very promising for a good night’s sleep. :-(

We certainly DO have a lot of ‘em! LOL
Ellie’s doing fine now. Her appetite is back to normal so it’s all good.
The kittens are doing great. They turned 4 months old today. I’ve been trying to get some new pix of them but to no avail. If they’re awake, they’re in motion and I’m having no luck getting decent shots. They’re only still when they’re asleep.
Churchill (Buckwheat’s half-brother) turned 17 Friday. He’s our oldest.

Awwww...happy birthday, Churchhill! 17...that is an old kitty!
Guess I’d better head out. The early wake-up is catching up with me. See ya tomorrow night whenever we both get here. :)

He’s an old man but is in darn good shape for his age. Most cats lose a little weight when they get that old but he hasn’t. My hope is we’ll celebrate his 18th birthday next year.
I was surprised you were still awake at this late hour after waking up so early. LOL! Sleep well and LATE in the morning. :-)
