The FReeper Canteen Presents...
Happy Labor Day!

H I S T O R Y |
Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival. It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day. The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism. In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday. Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries. |
For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder. |

So what about you? How are you celebrating Labor Day?
Please remember that The Canteen is here to support and entertain our troops and veterans and their families, and is family friendly.

LOL! They can get pretty persuasive when they want out, can’t they?
Percy says “meeowwwt” in a whiney tone.

LOL! I love your description for Labor Day for the retired.
How’s your weather? We saw some “s” on the tip top of the mountain one day, but the next days of rain took it away.

Oh, yeah. They persuade you in many ways.
Ginger is OCD. When she comes in in the mornings, she has to make the rounds to see if everything is where it was the day before. She isn’t happy when somehting’s been moved. And she chats the entire time she’s looking. Then she goes to the food dish. LOL!

Ok, movie’s over and I was able to watch this video without interruption.
INSANE! ROTFLMAO!! I had no idea Zappa went that far back.
Steve Allen had no idea what to think about him and his wild musical ideas. That was fun!

LOL! Sounds like Leno feels the same as we do about “rice rockets”. I get behind the wheel in Baby and kinda want to roll over those little cars. People driving them do tend to get out of the way when they see all that chrome coming at them in the rear view mirror. :-)

Amen, MY!
And in Galveston, Beaumont, Port Arthur, Corpus Christi, Aransas, and Rockport. I’d love to know how the cottages there fared. I have a feeling they’ve been flattened. I can’t find a website for them.

Percy’s a bit OCD but not when he comes in. It’s when he goes out. Has to make the rounds around the yard, I guess making sure there are no smells of newcomers on his turf. He’s been here long enough he knows a newbie could show up at any time. LOL

Actually, I found
Their Facebook Page if you still have your account there.
They got damage, but the Pelican Bay cottages and trees are still recognizable.
Here is their website.
