German prosecutors believe nurse killed at least 86 patients

BERLIN (AP) — A male nurse who was convicted of killing patients in Germany with overdoses of heart medication is now believed to have killed at least 86 people — and the true scale of the killings could be even larger, investigators said Monday.

Many of the deaths could have been prevented if health authorities had acted more quickly on their suspicions, said Johann Kuehme, police chief in the northwestern city of Oldenburg.

If they mean that the overall mortality rate doubled (across all shifts), then the mortality rate DURING the shifts he worked must have been much higher. Sounds like they had no statistical monitoring or review at all, bad bad practice:

The police chief also faulted local health authorities who failed to act as it allegedly came apparent that the death rate at Delmenhorst hospital's intensive care unit almost doubled while Niels H. worked there. "If the people responsible at the time, particularly at the Oldenburg clinic but also later in Delmenhorst, hadn't hesitated to alert authorities - for example police, prosecutors -" Niels H. could have been apprehended sooner, Kühme said. Two former senior doctors and the head of station Delmenhorst are also facing manslaughter charges in connection with the death of patients.

Police say the abnormalities stretch back to 2000 at another clinic in Oldenburg. They said staff had a meeting there in 2001 to discuss the strange levels of deaths and resuscitations, but did not report the levels to police, and Niels H was able to move to the Delmendorst clinic.

In the case of these investigations, they had to go and request digging up the remains of a number of folks....this all led to hyped-up relatives believing in a murder situation. If you go and read through everything....they put the number out there of 200...but if you start at day one of association with hospitals....there might be way more than the 200 people in this circle by the time you reach an end-point.
