The fact that we celebrate the Every Student Succeeds Act for shifting education policy back to the states is an alarming indicator of federal dysfunction. Instead of rejoicing about a reduced extent of unauthorized federal meddling in state affairs, we should work to remove the heavy hand of centralized government entirely from every sphere in which it has no legitimate authority.
A quick visit to the U.S. Department of Educations website reveals just how thoroughly the feds have burst the seams of their constitutional pants. There we find the agency reminding states about deadlines for submitting State plans for education creating the distinct impression that it possesses some broad power to oversee education policy nationwide.
Its means of exercising this assumed power is the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by ESSA. This legal tome instructs our state governments in the crafting of these State plans to be delivered to the Supreme Education Rulers according to the aforementioned deadlines. It is an intricate, 449-page web of detailed instructions for the states, which are relegated to a serf-like role: find ways to achieve the priorities of the Almighty Department (never mind the priorities of parents) and then invest resources into demonstrating that you have done so.
Its no wonder President Ronald Reagan referred to the U.S. Department of Education as a bureaucratic boondoggle.
From a practical perspective, one has to wonder why anyone thinks the states need guidance from a federal agency. Does someone think that federal officials are smarter, better-trained, or care more about education than their state counterparts?
From a constitutional perspective, one has to wonder why anyone thinks that the national government has any power over public schooling. Read through Article I, Section 8, which enumerates Congress powers. It mentions nothing about education. Yet Congress purposes in Title I of the Act to provide all children significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps. Its a laudable goal, but one that Congress is utterly without power to pursue.

Of course, what we need is zero control or involvement by government at any level in education. Government schools are a failure from beginning through college.

Come to think of it, Secretary DeVos has been mia ever since she capitulated on putting the clamps on Common Core. Last I heard she was going to ‘study’ the effects of Common Core for 300 days!
Not sure of those are calendar days, school days, or what.
What good is ‘school choice’ if every school indoctrinates?

The Department of Education should simply be abolished.
Other branches and departments also need to be abolished, but that is an easy one. Do it now.
This is a nice rhetorical conversation but WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
It’s been 40 years since Carter created the Department of Education. Everyone now thinks it’s necessary. Many probably think it’s always existed. We’re stuck with it.
That applies to EVERY aspect of our lives.
The Founding Fathers would be appalled at what we've allowed to happen to the relationship between the States and the federal government.
The States created the federal government, not the other way around.
It takes some effort, but once we get that concept through our thick skulls, we'll be able to right the ship.

Each state should give every student a voucher and then leave it alone.
Not only is the Dept of Education highly ideological, it is also now the conduit for the massive debt being fed into the university system, mainly through students.
They are enslaving an entire generation of hapless students with tens of thousands of dollars in debt which can never be discharged. Not only that, they are greatly contributing to the next economic crash.
How about getting the FedGov completely out of education. No oversight, no fed funding, and shuttering the DoEd. The DoEd is another “artifact” of Jimmah Cahatah’s admin:

Carter’s plan was to transfer most of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare’s education-related functions to the Department of Education. Carter also planned to transfer the education-related functions of the departments of Defense, Justice, Housing and Urban Development, and Agriculture, as well as a few other federal entities. Among the federal education-related programs that were not proposed to be transferred were Headstart, the Department of Agriculture’s school lunch and nutrition programs, the Department of the Interior’s Native Americans’ education programs, and the Department of Labor’s education and training programs.
That has been my passion for years and years.
Whenever any group accepts Federal Money, they are asking for Federal meddling in that group’s daily actions.
Any states with any gonads left can/should just ignore this from the illegal/unconstitutional feds.
But at this point ALL states have become emasculated, have taken their hormone treatments, have had their surgeries, and are now tranny states.
The feds are the nanny state babying all the tranny states.
That's where it started, with the cold-war children. Now is the end game.
