Since Friday, the National Weather Service has described the impacts Hurricane (and now Tropical Storm) Harvey in superlatives, with forecasts stating the flooding would be catastrophic and life threatening.
Now, nearly 50 inches of rain (4 feet!) are in the forecast as Harvey stalls over Houston, and the Weather Service is stretching to find the right way to describe the risk.
Theyre calling the situation unprecedented.
Long-time weather journalists and meteorologists are saying this language is as dire as the National Weather Service gets.
Rains could last through the week. Five are reported dead already. More deaths may come. This situation is likely to get worse before it gets better.

Every one who wants government handouts should head to New Orleans in a reverse migration.
“Rains”?
What’s with the plural?
From Katy, tx west of Houston.
This is a very tough situation in the Houston area.
Genuine sorrow for lost lives and homes.
But this weather stuff is part of the design for earth, on god’s spinning mud ball.
Or in other words, “It is what it is.”
Stopping and starting.

I think this is NWS-speak for significant loss of life. It is hard to see how that will not be the case, unfortunately.
I was in Katy 2 weks ago (stayed by th eKaty Mills Mall). How bad is it out there?
Rains could last through the week.

Rain could last through the week.
About 2,000 rescues. And we still have two or three days to go.
Prayers would be much appreciated.
Trump’s fault!
The White House bungled their response to Hurricane Harvey, allowing the storm to stall over a major city!
Women and minorities hardest hit!
A list of moderate totalitarian leftists is calling for President Trump’s impeachment!
This atrocity will finally spell the final end of Trump’s bumpy political career - peak Trump!
[Those points probably will be the highlights of tonight’s news.]
The Galveston Flood hurricane of 1900 killed between 6 and 12,000 people and wasted Galveston. is that precedent enough? how about over 1200 in Katrina which flooded out New Orleans.
On aug 24th there was a prediction of 50 inches of rain.
Did anyone in media..politics or weatherman predict it publicly as early as Thursday
What horrifying numbers!
It takes a few inches in a day to cause lots of flooding in some places.
These numbers ARE indescribable.
God Bless Texas folks. Prayers out from NYC.
I was watching the weather channel earlier when they announced the NWS message, they were pretty shocked and at a loss for words.
The thing I have noticed it’s neighbor helping neighbor, anyone with a kayak or anything larger is out rescuing people. I have also not heard one report of looting imagine that.
Huge storm, yes. Unprecedented? No.
Another Harvey report indicated that a lot of "rooves" were damaged.
Strange style-book being used for this one.
