House Speaker Paul Ryan on Saturday criticized President Donald Trump for pardoning a former Arizona sheriff, Joe Arpaio, becoming the highest-ranking Republican to object to the move.
The speaker does not agree with the decision, said Ryan spokesman Doug Andres. Law-enforcement officials have a special responsibility to respect the rights of everyone in the United States. We should not allow anyone to believe that responsibility is diminished by this pardon.
The White House didnt immediately respond to a request for comment about Mr. Ryans statement.
On Friday, the White House announced that the president had pardoned Mr. Arpaio, known as an immigration hard-liner who had been sheriff of Maricopa County for 24 years before he lost a re-election bid last year.
Mr. Arpaio, an early supporter of Mr. Trumps presidential campaign, was convicted last month for disobeying a 2011 federal court order to halt immigration raids. He was to be sentenced in October and faced up to six months in jail.
As sheriff he took aggressive measures to curb illegal immigration, including hunting people who crossed the border illegally in remote parts of his county, launching workplace raids and conducting traffic stops.
In a tweet Friday, the president described Mr. Arpaio as a patriot who kept Arizona safe.
A statement from the White House Friday said:
Throughout his time as sheriff, Arpaio continued his lifes work of protecting the public from the scourges of crime and illegal immigration. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now eighty-five years old, and after more than fifty years of admirable service to our nation, he is a worthy candidate for a presidential pardon.
Mr. Arpaio didnt respond to a request for comment, but in several tweets after the pardon he thanked the president and his supporters, while also asking for donations to his legal fund.

What? They haven’t drafted a bill forbidding the President to pardon people yet?
The speaker does not agree with the decision, said Ryan spokesman Doug Andres. Law-enforcement officials have a special responsibility to respect the rights of everyone in the United States. We should not allow anyone to believe that responsibility is diminished by this pardon.
“Everyone in the United States” meaning only illegal immigrants.
Yes. Primaries. Hard-fought, jarring, expensive primaries.
Give Dems & Media a talking point!!
Get rid of these traitors!
Kentuckians truly believe that McC stands up for “people like them”! Imagine that.
Yup. We support Trump. We support Arpaio. We are here. We are real. Cross us—diss Trump—at your peril. Go ahead. Use that talking point.
God bless President Trump. He makes them show their true colors.
I’m so with you on this. Sheriff Joe lives in a state that is inundated with illegal entry into the country and many of them are involved in damgerous criminal activity. S Joe was a huge asset to our country. He should be awarded, but at a minimum pardoned. The fact that Ryan has made public how he feels, makes it much easier to know that he will not receive support from me. . He is a huge problem. He should be supporting Trump and keeping the party strong on this issue. At least we know he’s a ‘swamper’. Ryan probably enjoys all the ‘atta boy’ and pats on the back for stating his opposition to Trump. His gloating won’t last long.
Trump is flushing out all the Rinos and Undocumented Democratic plants in Congress!
President Trump and we will get rid of Undocumented Democrats posing as Republicans in congress!
Including many Drug Dealers who used Firearms in commission of their Crimes.
You know, what Democrats call Non Violent Offenders.
It’s only a Violent Crime of you are a Law Abiding Citizen protecting yourself from a Democrat.
Wish he’d shut his ugly face.
Paul Ryan is so bad at speaking... His speeches sound like they are written by a 4th grader and said out loud by a 3rd grader.
Ryan is fast becoming despised by the winners of the election. DESPISED!!!!
Stand by for the "I could never vote for a Democrat" Crowd. Several of us tried t encourage freepers to vote for the Democrat if Ryan won the primary, we were scalded for our effort.
Joe was not convicted of anything. He was adjudged to have violated a judges order, the order itself was questionably illegal, but in any case he was deemed to be guilty by the Judge who refused to let a jury hear the case.
Prisoners have limited rights.
Unlike Ryan who seems to think they have Special Rights beyond those of law abiding USA Citizens.
If you voted for John McCain you voted for someone who took money from Soros and works for Demonrat issues.
If you voted for Lynda Graham, you voted for someone who took money from Soros and works for Demonrat issues.
If you voted for Paul Ryan, you voted for someone who took money from Soros and works for Demonrat issues.
What is the difference between these scum RINOs and Demonrats? They are all working together to destroy our county.
The Sheriff did not disrespect the rights of anyone. Only someone not willing to look at the whole picture can fault a public office holder for recognizing that the rights of the citizens he represents, clearly trump any right of an alien law breaker, to go undetected.
The arbitrary rules--ridiculous rules--against investigating status, are not Constitutional duties.
Ryan needs to stop trying to be "politically correct," and wake up!
Yeah I made the point that the never democratic voter has voted for plenty of them but maybe didn't know it because they had an (R) by their name.
Of course he does. He is the engineer on the train called Cheap Labor. Joe is his mortal enemy.
