House Speaker Paul Ryan on Saturday criticized President Donald Trump for pardoning a former Arizona sheriff, Joe Arpaio, becoming the highest-ranking Republican to object to the move.
The speaker does not agree with the decision, said Ryan spokesman Doug Andres. Law-enforcement officials have a special responsibility to respect the rights of everyone in the United States. We should not allow anyone to believe that responsibility is diminished by this pardon.
The White House didnt immediately respond to a request for comment about Mr. Ryans statement.
On Friday, the White House announced that the president had pardoned Mr. Arpaio, known as an immigration hard-liner who had been sheriff of Maricopa County for 24 years before he lost a re-election bid last year.
Mr. Arpaio, an early supporter of Mr. Trumps presidential campaign, was convicted last month for disobeying a 2011 federal court order to halt immigration raids. He was to be sentenced in October and faced up to six months in jail.
As sheriff he took aggressive measures to curb illegal immigration, including hunting people who crossed the border illegally in remote parts of his county, launching workplace raids and conducting traffic stops.
In a tweet Friday, the president described Mr. Arpaio as a patriot who kept Arizona safe.
A statement from the White House Friday said:
Throughout his time as sheriff, Arpaio continued his lifes work of protecting the public from the scourges of crime and illegal immigration. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now eighty-five years old, and after more than fifty years of admirable service to our nation, he is a worthy candidate for a presidential pardon.
Mr. Arpaio didnt respond to a request for comment, but in several tweets after the pardon he thanked the president and his supporters, while also asking for donations to his legal fund.

“Hes signalling to the left: go ahead and take out the top two; Ill be much more agreeable to you as president.”
You may have hit the nail on the head, regarding his motivation.
But it is not going to work. Ryan is turning too many people against himself.
Can I add one to your list?
linda acts like a queer. Check.
Thanks.
That rotten weasel. He must be pretty sure of himself; “thinks he’s something on a stick”, as my uncle used to say. I’m praying he doesn’t win the primary in 2018. If he doesn’t, I’ll bet it won’t be for lack of the RNC’s trying. We’ve got to get behind these conservative primary candidates.
“Law-enforcement officials have a special responsibility to respect the rights of everyone in the United States. We should not allow anyone to believe that responsibility is diminished by this pardon.”
Yeah, like they should have never prosecuted Sheriff Joe for Obama’s un-American political reasons. Bastards all!
We need to demolish the RINO party and remove all these treasonous miscreants!!!
Has little Paulie Ryan managed to make a SINGLE correct decision since he went to Washington?
This was a Politicized Misdemeanor Case, not a Felony.
Obama Pardoned a Traitor and the Traitor got Taxpayer Sex Assignment Surgery as a reward. Obama also Pardoned Drug Dealers who used Firearms in the commission of their Crimes.
Yep, President Trump really went too far this time.
Ryan is dirty... he needs to be investigated.
Ryan is a real weasel. If I were in his state I’d vote for the Democrat just to get rid of him since he’s a Leftist. The same goes for McCain.
Ryan is a political coward. They will never make a movie about him entitled “Saving Private Ryan - Part II” because Private Ryan was a brave and honorable man. Ryan is none of these.
They blast Trump for pardoning a former police officer for ignoring a federal judge order where no one was hurt, and Obama pardoned this array of animals with nothing being said:

In November 2010, Arpaio created an armed illegal immigration operations posse to help his deputies enforce immigration law. Members of the posse included actors Steven Seagal, Lou Ferrigno, and Peter Lupus. Because the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) lost its authority to enforce immigration law (both by losing its 287(g) authority and through the Federal court’s order in Melendrez v. Arpaio), the posse is no longer active. As of July 29, 2015, the posse had 986 members.
So for defending the US from illegal possible terrorists and drug packers coming illegally into the US, on his time, he was imprisoned. Trump just righted a wrong.

Paul Ryan & Mitch McConnell must go...they both are 100%failures, traitors and turncoats.
I dont recall any criticisms of either Clinton or Obama decisions to whom to pardon.
Exactly!
There are no guidelines. There is the constitution.
Ryan’s gulag: prison for political opponents of the beast system which has taken over DC.
That one definitely pissed me off.
And now this.
If he fought Obama half as much as he fights for illegals and leftist terrorists Obama would have been impeached.
With the exception of Bergdahl and Manning, seems like most of barry’s pardons were commuted sentences for drug dealers...meth, heroin, and cocaine!
Google it...
Has he ever supported the President on any issues? Seriously, has he???
And the remaining Republicans in the House remain silent.
Given these a-holes are subject to reelection every two years, one might think they’d be concerned about returning home to face their constituents.
