On 14 August, 2017, Governor Bruce Rauner signed SB 607, the reform of the Illinois ban on switchblade knives, into law.
(2) The provision of paragraph (1) of subsection (a) of this Section prohibiting the sale, manufacture, purchase, possession, or carrying of any knife, commonly referred to as a switchblade knife, which has a blade that opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in the handle of the knife, does not apply to a person who possesses a currently valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card previously issued in his or her name by the Department of State Police or to a person or an entity engaged in the business of selling or manufacturing switchblade knives.
There are about 2.1 million FOID card holders in Illinois. This is a significant reform, because it eliminates the statewide ban on these knives for 2.1 million people.
Any resident of Illinois with a clean record can obtain an FOID card for $10 and the trouble of filling out an application.
Illinois residents can thank the busy and productive people at Knife Rights for this much needed reform of Illinois law. Knife Rights Director of Legislative Affairs, Todd Rathner, was able to negotiate this reform through the labyrinthine Illinois political system.
At one point, a compromise was set to allow people with concealed carry permits to carry switchblades. Todd Rathner was able to enlarge that group to all people who have FOID cards, a 10 fold increase.
It is not a complete solution, but it is an incremental step in the right direction. Unfortunately, only Illinois residents may apply for and receive an FOID. There is precedent in Illinois weapons law to treat people who can legally carry

Now, why should I have to pay anyone to carry a knife.
Any knife, gun, or weapon I choose
You can’t carry a knife that opens quickly because it’s scary, and law makers don’t like scary things. Personally I’d rather just carry a regular knife with little or no moving parts, but a switch blade (or butterfly knife) ban is ridiculous.
As a full-member in the “Church of the Sacred Gravity & Spring Blade” your switchblade is a religious item.
Muzzies get to carry a knife onto planes, so you can carry your precious religious object too.
FSM’s get to have a Driver’s License photo with a spaghetti strainer on the head, you get your special religious accommodation too.
That’s an improvement but you still have to have an Elmer FOID card. I wonder how far I’d get in Illinois with a fixed blade kukri on my belt. For that matter I wonder how far I’d get here in Colorado.
There are many folding knives that open as fast as the evil switchblade. My EDC is a Kershaw Cryo. You can buy them at Walmart, even in NY. They only difference is you slide your finger over a lever built into the blade to activate the spring vs pushing a button to activate the spring.
I prefer Micro - Tec
Suppose there will be a lot more citizens of the Southside of Chicago showing up for a gun fight with a knife!
Anything with a spring is classed as “spring assist”, which is treated like a switchblade in many states. But there are “flippers” which deploy the blade just as easily without a spring, using a lever you flick with your index finger. Then there is the gravity knife which opens by inertia when you flick the knife itself. These are illegal in Canada even though many knives are unintentionally gravity knives by their loose-blade folding design. The initial detent typically keeps them from unfolding accidentally. I carry one by Benchmade, a small folder but even that would be illegal in California to the south, where any blade over 2 inches is banned.

I have a Cuda Maxx 5.5, I don’t often carry it, but I have, and I don’t need a permit and anyone’s GD permission.
I can smell your feloniousness from here...:)
A hardened criminal, that Impy is...
;p
HEY! An old friend...! Damn, that show was good.
