THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
GEORGE GERSHWIN
THE GOLDWYN FOLLIES
DIANE SCHUUR: LOVE WALKED INIn 2006, Diane showed that songs can become timeless. This is a solid jazz version of the tune.
Diane Schuur: Love Walked In
AND SO OUR SAGA ENDSIn 1937, while working on two musicals for RKO and one for Goldwyn, George began to complain of blinding headaches and the smell of burning rubber. In a February performance of his Piano Concerto in San Francisco, he suffered coordination problems and blackouts. He was bedeviled by mood swings and problems with eating. A trip to the hospital showed nothing physically wrong, and his problems were attributed to mental illness.
On the night of July 9, George collapsed, was rushed to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital and fell into a coma. Only then did his doctors suspect that he was suffering from a brain tumor. Through several intermediaries, Dr. Walter Dandys name was suggested. At the time, Dandy was on a boat fishing in Chesapeake Bay with the governor of Maryland. Enter FDR, who had a Coast Guard cutter dispatched to find the governors yacht and bring Dandy to shore. A chartered plane flew Dandy to Newark, where he was to catch a flight to Los Angeles. However, by this time Gershwins condition was critical and the need for surgery immediate. In the early hours of July 11, doctors removed a large glioblastoma, but it was too late. Gershwin died on the morning of July 11, 1937, at the age of 38.
As with Mozart and Schubert, Gershwin died in his Thirties at the peak of his form, which makes his end especially tragic. He had conquered Broadway and the movies, gained the admiration of Rachmaninov, Ravel and Stravinsky, and written an opera.
Had he lived a normal life span, what path would he have chosen? More Broadway and Hollywood? Or opera and classical music? How would he have reacted to rock and roll? He would have been in his mid fifties when the music changed, but it would have brought him back to his roots in early R&B and jazz. Its one of those questions to which well never have an answer. Its been 80 years, but we still mourn his loss.

HI Radu!
He has mostly been a good boy.
His Mommy wasn’t too happy to discover he had
eaten the tips off the peacock feathers she had placed in a large vase on the floor.
*fuming*
Those feathers look very sad and bedraggled, and actually I am trying not to laugh about it!

Such a sad and tragic loss for us and the world.
He looked so much like my paternal grand father, it’s amazing!
