Mr. Farber is correct. Anyone that has spent significant time in the deep south knows these things. Of course there are pockets of individuals who are racists everywhere across the country. But having been to both parts of the country, I always found higher tensions in the north/north east than in some places in deep Mississippi. And over the past 12 to 14 years things have been on the decline. So today, President Trump will be in Reno to talk to the American Legion folks. Already, the assclowns are gearing up to embarrass the city again. He will be hatefully greeted by people preaching hate and toting signs decrying hate while in full hate mode. Yes, the are idiots. A lot of them have been picking apart his talk in Phoenix last night without ever even listening to it. As predicted by Trump. Just snippets and unconfirmed accusations. Typical.

Yankees are more racist than Southerners ever were.

You will see more mixed race couples down here in The South that up north.

The late poet laureate Maya Angelou observed that Southerners and northerners reacted differently to blacks in America.

She noted that Southerners liked blacks on an individual basis, but not as a group. They would have black friends and associates on a one-on-one basis.

But northerners were exactly opposite. They liked blacks as a group, but not on an individual basis. IOW, not next door and not my friend..................

"Although it wrenches my soul to confront it, there are reasons why the South has so often been wracked by racial rioting—by outpourings of the rage of the downtrodden against an unjust civilization. However much the states of the old Confederacy may seek to deny it, they cannot. People do not take to the streets, burn their homes and cities, unless pressed beyond forbearance by the cruelty of the oppressor’s iron fist.

Thus these eruptions of racial desperation have occurred all across Dixie: in Detroit, Ferguson, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Washington DC, Watts, St. Louis, Cincinnati. Yes. Though I am a son of the Southland, I will not lie. The truth is the truth. I bow my head in shame.

And I am further forced to own that, while the black population of the North prospers, and mingles easily with its white brethren in casual but sincere amity, in the South the Negro huddles in the slums, denied schooling, and living on the meager charity of whites. Should you doubt this, look to Newark, Trenton, Camden, Detroit, Chicago, Flint, Gary. The flowering of blacks in the North a century and a half after the end of the Civil War, the rise in scholarly achievement, the frequent and accepted intermarriage of the races—here we have irrefutable proof of the superior moral culture of the North."

When I first started spending time down south I thought their hospitality was just a put on. But it’s not .they are friendlier and trusting then nothetners.
I think northerners are grumpier due, in part cause of our long hard winters..but also because how we are raise.

This map supports this article.

Also, why would so many blacks choose to live in the south if it was so racist?

I just got back from a week in the 4x4 area of the northern Outer Banks in North Carolina. No paved roads whatsoever, state highway 12 is the beach. Don't Tread On Me flags, Confederate battle flags, even skull and crossbones pirate Confederate flags were everywhere, on backs of 4x4's, on flagpoles of beach houses, you name it.

Very popular place, and not just with those who live there or were renting beach houses. People drive up just for the day, or rent a Jeep to come up from the very groomed and resort-ey beach towns just to the south, Corolla and Duck. There were also a fair number of black people there, and get this, they didn't seem particularly disturbed and they certainly didn't appear to be uncomfortable in the least.

They were enjoying their day on the beach in their 4x4's just like everybody else, swimming, fishing, taking a walk, looking for seashells, playing volleyball, throwing frisbees, you know, what people do at the beach.

I spent my childhood in segregated Memphis. Spent most of my adult life in lily white south east Ohio and West Virginia. Now live in Upstate South Carolina, which at least in terms of jobs and neighborhoods, is quite racially and ethnically diverse. Socialization, on the other hand, tends to be still segregated.

I’m from the South, raised in the South and worked in the South. I can tell you that the Black people I know are so much fun. Whites tend to be reserved in my generation, but Blacks are down to earth and very caring for all. Just good people. In pains me to see how the movies portray Southern Blacks and Whites.

Klan is all over the South and yes, in places in the North too. How does Mr. Farber dismiss this?

Born and raised in Rochester, NY. Never stationed North of Myrtle Beach and settled in S. MS. I can vouch that the author is absolutely correct. Over the last few elections, saw many Blacks with stickers/posters for our side of the aisle even against Obama. Also see many who are salt of the earth folks who believe in working for a living.

Yes. I travel the USA. I am from Alabama and I never hear the racist bs like I do from those up north. Been this way for 30+ years. I’ve had blacks tell me the same.

Ohio!!!

Who cares. I always say “wait, so disliking wide open borders, welfare for illegals, and affirmative action makes me a racist Nazi”? Ok then fine I’m a racist.

Something most of our Boomer Politicians are scared to do

I lived in Mississippi for a bit back in the mid 70s, and went to elementary school there.

The first thing that got my attention was that blacks and white were bussed in on separate busses.

But overall, black students and white students got along fine, I had black friends, and we thought nothing of it.

I’m a yankee (actually a country girl who happened to be born in the Bronx) and I accept all people on a case-by-case basis. (I love that line in “Family Man”). I think I learned do that in Sunday School. I have brothers and sisters (most I have not met) from all nations, tribes, peoples, and languages.

I have a friend, who is black and a veteran. Told me the funniest story about him having a visit for an old army buddy for somewhere up north. The buddy (who was also black) came down to NC for a visit and they were on the front porch right before dusk. My friend notice that his buddy was getting nervous the closer to night fall. He asked him what is the matter? The buddy replied don’t you think we need to get in the house before the klan comes out.

I’ve lived in both the North and the South and I totally agree.
