DVID reports on the damage sustained by the Navy vessel:

Damage to the portside is visible as the Guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) steers towards Changi Naval Base, Republic of Singapore, following a collision with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while underway east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore on Aug. 21. Significant damage to the hull resulted in flooding to nearby compartments, including crew berthing, machinery, and communications rooms. Damage control efforts by the crew halted further flooding. The incident will be investigated.

How in hell does something like this happen?

My theory as a licensed captain for the past 40 years is that their are two many people on the bridge and in the operations command chain and they become a distraction. On commercial vessels the captain is the steersman, throttle man, navigator and radar observer. He also is the sole lookout.

On a typical navel vessel their are 6 to 8 people performing the same task and reporting up the chain to a commander who makes decisions down through the chain. What could possibly go wrong?

That’s exactly right, and if I’m not mistaken, they are only called Captain when they are on board their vessel.

WOW - some pretty nasty comments at the link...guess the current message of “peace and love” from antifa hasn’t reached those people...you know, the “tolerant” ones and of course, the perpetually offended ones!

Plain as day that we could never count on one of that mess to protect this country!

If you cannot Dodge other ships how can you dodge anti ship missiles or icbm’s adapted to attack large ships?

someone is spending too much time on cultural Marxism.

our men in every service are spending way too much time on stupid stuff totally unrelated to defending this country.

“Rumors are both captains are affirmative action guys.”

It’s interesting that relieved skipper of the Fitzgerald isn’t named in any MSM reports I can find.

Yet, when the name of the skipper of the Sub San Francisco that smacked into a seamount 12 years ago is all over the internet and he isn’t AA.

Rumor has it that the Chinese are testing something that interferes with systems on the ships.

That’s two of our ships disabled by civilian vessels - won’t get into any conspiracy theories but coincidence doesn’t seem to answer it.

It seems obvious the commanders put in place by the Obama administration were/are affirmative action!

Maybe they were enjoying a doobie.

This is 0bama's military. Hard to overcome 8 years of attack quickly.

Electronics are one thing - - my question is what the hell were the lookouts on the Nav ship doing? Merchant running with no lights?

I saw a video on how to hack GPS Signals the other month. I wonder in the Navy is using unencrypted GPS data. You can use this hack to send false GPS signals to the GPS navigation computer, guiding the ship into a reef or another ship.

The Navy should not be having those accidents in this short period of time..... We need to go back to our older navigation systems, pre GPS.

Very easy to do. Web Search it, average programmer/hacker can do this, the info is out on the web....

Wonder if this is how Iran stole the Drone a couple years back.

"Time to ban the bulbous bow..."

Is joke, yes? The bulbous bow is a major advance in improving the efficiency of large ships, resulting in tremendous fuel and cost savings.

The problem is with the carbon based life forms manning the vessels, not their designs or configurations.

Is joke yes. Helps cut through the water but sure causes big time damage to US destroyers. Maybe our destroyers should try getting out of the way. Hmmmm. Go aground or get rammed.

“Port side and further aft than Fitz. Berthing area? Time to ban those bulbous noses on oil tankers.”

Time to get some alert sailors.

A fully functional GPS will allow you to easily avoid running aground and it will help you navigate to your assignment or port of call. It will tell you absolutely nothing about any ship in your area. Does your car GPS tell you anything about the big Semi barreling down on you at 70 miles an hour. No it doesn’t, neither does the Navy GPS tell them about the 50,000 ton tanker barreling down them at 15 knots. That is where radar and the Mark 1 eyeball come into play in preventing collisions at sea.

“Port side means Left and Starboard side is the right side.”
Yes, port and starboard, left and right when looking forward towards the bow (front end or pointy end) of the ship).
