USS John S. McCain has collided with a merchant vessel east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca. The guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain was involved in a collision with a merchant vessel east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca, the Navy said in a tweet. Initial reports indicate the warship sustained damage to its port side aft. No immediate word on any casualties. Search and rescue efforts are under way in coordination with local authorities, the Navy said. The warship is named after John S. McCain, Sr., and John S. McCain, Jr., both Admirals in the U.S. Navy, and the grandfather and father, respectively, of the Arizona senator.

One more crash for McCain. It’s the only thing he excels at.
I think they have to play with their electronic toys. I have seen things that made me think my ship was being played with electronically going back to the 70’s and on.
Malacca Straits is no place to let your guard down, or have social engineering as your forte. Some of the highest traffic in the world are in those narrow confines.
Our gyro pilot went out in the Malacca Straits once when I was on watch. I noticed as it happened and had the helmsman switch to hand steering by magnetic compass. Gyro came back on as soon as we came back on course Don’t know if someone targeted us or if it was a one time rare event.
“Are the captains being punished after these crashes?”
Yes. As are anyone in the chain who is deemed to derelict in duty. I think the count on the Fitzgerald is 13 relieved of duty. Careers probably ruined
Well, that's one way to render your four billion dollar aircraft carrier irrelevant. Just steer it right into the path of some supersonic, nuclear tipped drones and there it is.
Well, there you have it; they couldn't see it!
Seriously, spoofed or not, it was a big freaking ship and I can't believe a guided missile destroyer like the McCain was not agile enough to take evasive action. Assuming there were actually people on watch. And in light of the Fitzgerald incident??? What has Øbama done to our Navy?
fool me once...
I concluded that it is a good idea to keep as far away from the other boat as you can.
Both this ship and the Fitzgerald are Arleigh Burke Class missile destroyers.
Just a week or so my wife and I were in Bath, Maine alongside the Bath Iron Works where both were built.
It is beyond amazing to have two virtually identical ships have such a mishap within months.
What is it about our “highly trained” Navy that they keep running into ships in the ocean? Do they know what they’re doing??
I’m wondering if someone is trying to knock out a specific piece of equipment.
The opinion I was left with after following the Fitzgerald episode was that it was clearly going to be laid at the feet of certain crew members of the Fitz.
I wonder if this was named after his Admiral dad ?
Please pardon my failing to read your entire post.
All of us send prayers heavenward for your nephew and give thanks for his service.
This is enemy action planned when everybody thought HRC would win.
Prayers for all aboard both ships.
Irony, let's call it...
I suspect that the Navy looks pretty dimly on anyone whose ship gets hit.
The interesting thing now about the Fitzgerald is that it appears that the two ships involved weren’t running parallel. At least not initially.
Everybody forgets that the big concern before the Fitzgerald was someone sneaking a nuclear weapon on a civilian ship into a port.
The captain has to sleep sometimes..its the OOD that needs brig time.
ABC is reporting-—
A Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS John S. McCain, collided with a commercial vessel east of Singapore early Monday morning local time, the Navy said.
There were 10 sailors missing and five injured, the Navy said.
The collision with the merchant ship Alnic MC occurred east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore at 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time, as the McCain was on its way for a routine port visit in Singapore, the Navy said.
