USS John S. McCain has collided with a merchant vessel east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca. The guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain was involved in a collision with a merchant vessel east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca, the Navy said in a tweet. Initial reports indicate the warship sustained damage to its port side aft. No immediate word on any casualties. Search and rescue efforts are under way in coordination with local authorities, the Navy said. The warship is named after John S. McCain, Sr., and John S. McCain, Jr., both Admirals in the U.S. Navy, and the grandfather and father, respectively, of the Arizona senator.

We have a go-team with any useless, often-irrelevant Seinfeld quote prepared to attack and bomb any thread.

Just remember, when we’re not needed, we’re already there.

Sometimes we parachute in. To the Idiotmobile!

I know zero about navy ships.

But I have a question.

How can a US Navy Fighting ship which has all kinds of radar for battle purposes and devices that can locate submarines, manage to collide with a ship that is making no effort to hide?

The top officers of the Fitzgerald have already been relieved of duty and their careers are ended in the US Navy. I suspect others will follow.

This crew should have been extra careful as a result of the first accident. They should be in prison.

I believe there are still crew in harm’s way so I will reserve some obvious comments for now.

Liberian registry, home port of Monrovia, owned by Energetic Tank, Inc the vessel Alnic MC was operated by Stealth Maritime, Inc an 18 year old Greek based company.

Don’t they teach seamanship in the US Navy any more?

After the USS Cole, it ought to be an automatic general discharge and 3 months in the brig for any captain that allows any vessel to get close enough to cause damage unless he can show that he fired on the ship to keep it away.

Make an example of one or two and the captains may pay more attention to protecting their ships and crews.

Actually, during WWII, John S. McCain Sr. was a senior admiral in the Pacific. He was present on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay for the surrender.

Duty done, he died about a week later.

Close, but no cigar. (I have a hunch you’re toying with us. Anyway, Ella was not THAT big).

SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American Great Lakes freighter that sank in a Lake Superior storm on November 10, 1975, with the loss of the entire crew of 29. When launched on June 7, 1958, she was the largest ship on North America’s Great Lakes, and she remains the largest to have sunk there.

Maybe someone is hacking, spoofing, or otherwise screwing with electronic systems — this is way too much to seem like coincidence, all these recent naval accidents in East Asian waters!!

Red China????

Although I would think that if they had this capability they would save it for an actual battle situation, rather than demonstrate it now and let us work on counter-measures..... but something is waaaaay off about these repeated accidents.

It should be noted that although the vessel has no Chinese connections, China was protesting it and other vessels routes as recently as eight days ago.

Couldn't have happened to a better namesake.

Absolutely - I would pray for the safety of the crew at all times.

The physical forces involved in such a collision are scary.

I guess when you lower the standards to the point that Idiocracy, the movie, is a documentary, this happens often.
