Jeh Johnson: Removal of Confederate Statues a Matter of ‘Homeland Security’
freebeacon ^ | August 20, 2017 | David Rutz

Posted on 08/20/2017 9:01:53 AM PDT by MarvinStinson

Former Obama administration official Jeh Johnson said the removal of Confederate statues was a matter of "public safety and homeland security" on Sunday.

In the aftermath of deadly violence in Charlottesville, Va., when a man with white nationalist ties was arrested for ramming his car into a crowd of counter-protesters last week and killing a woman, Confederate monuments across the country have been taken down. The furor in Charlottesville began with a protest by white supremacists against the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee.

Johnson served as Secretary of Homeland Security under Obama, and he said on ABC's "This Week" that the monuments to Confederates were helping to rally white nationalists.

"What alarms so many of us from a security perspective is that so many of the statues, the Confederate monuments, are now, modern-day, becoming symbols and rallying points for white nationalism, for neo-Nazis, for the KKK, and this is most alarming," Johnson said. "We fought a world war against Naziism. The KKK reigned terror on African Americans for generations."

"I salute those in cities and states who are taking down a lot of these monuments for reasons of public safety and security," he added. "And that's not a a matter of political correctness. That's a matter of public safety and homeland security and doing what's right."

Host Martha Raddatz said she felt the Trump administration would call that a "slippery slope," referring to local Washington locations like Washington-Lee High School and Jefferson Davis Highway.

"Where should that stop?" Raddatz asked.

Johnson said those kinds of decisions should be made at the local level.

President Donald Trump slammed the removal of such monuments as "foolish" and for ripping apart the "history and culture of our great country."

George Orwell’s vision of government in 1984 had the same kind of control that this former government operative wants.
What is happening now is so bizarre.

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten,  every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered.
And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped.
Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”...George Orwell, “1984”...

This is the kind of nonsense you have to say when your boss demands it.

Confederate statues were not an issue until someone *made* them an issue.
Take a look at the people committing the violence, not the excuse they use this week.
Next week it will be something else, no matter how many imagined offensive things we eliminate, the violence will continue until we deal with the root cause; some people are deliberately out there to generate unrest.

What no one ever mentions is NOBODY would have been killed if they would have left the statue alone. Few people even realized it was even there.

>>We fought a world war against Naziism.

We also fought the same world war against Italy and the Empire of Japan. Will we ban Japanese cars and spaghetti too?

Where did the term White Nationalism” come from?

I have heard of “White Separatists” and “White Supremacists”.

Before the Trump presidency, I had not heard the term.

Anyone know where it originated?

I just looked at the Wikipedia list of White Nationalist groups and they are all white supremacist groups.

Is this a ploy by the Left Media Cartel to conflate Trump’s nationalist policies and white supremacy?

It sure seems to be.

I just mentioned to hubby that I remember when the dukes of hazard went bye bye. That was after the conderate flag. Now statues are in the bullseye. I just read where a civil war reenactment got cancelled .

So statues are attacking people? That makes them almost as heinous as SUVs, except that SUVs are mobile and statues are not. [/s]

The Grand Cleansing. What is really scary is that it has only just begun. Libs smell blood.

If that odious statue of Lenin in Seattle is allowed to stand and not sledgehammered to pieces after all this BS, I feel like throwing in the towel, just pull up the drawbridge and live out the rest of my life in as much peace and quiet as can be managed in a country half-filled with braindead loons.

I read "Rules for Radicals", which I found to be one of the most unpalatable and immoral books I have ever read. This excerpt from the link you provided illustrates why:

"..Alinsky himself employed this method, quite deviously. Alinsky biographer, Sanford D. Horwitt provides an anecdote using precisely this diabolical tactic to deceive the people. From Horwitt's Let Them Call Me Rebel: "...in the spring of 1972, at Tulane University...students asked Alinsky to help plan a protest of a scheduled speech by George H. W. Bush, then U.S. representative to the United Nations - a speech likely to include a defense of the Nixon administration's Vietnam War policies. The students told Alinsky they were thinking about picketing or disrupting Bush's address. That's the wrong approach, he rejoined, not very creative - and besides causing a disruption might get them thrown out of school. He told them, instead, to go to hear the speech dressed as members of the Ku Klux Klan, and whenever Bush said something in defense of the Vietnam War, they should cheer and wave placards reading, ‘The KKK supports Bush.' And that is what they did, with very successful, attention-getting results..."

It isn't so much their resorting to dishonest tactics to get a result they cannot hope to obtain on the basis of rational discourse (this has been done as long as there is politics) but to specifically target and dishonestly present a picture to an audience based solely on a lie in the expectation they will buy it based solely on their utter and complete contempt for the intellect of the audience they are aiming at as allies (useful idiots) in their cause.

His boss Obozo was president for 8 years and these statues were no problem.

Now, 6 months later, they are a threat to national security.

Yeah ok.

“Johnson said those kinds of decisions should be made at the local level.”

I agree with that. Specifically, I think that whoever “owns” the statues should.
