As white supremacists converged on a Charlottesville park for their violent “Unite the Right” rally, some of them menaced the city’s historic Beth Israel synagogue during Shabbat services, standing across from the building with semi-automatic weapons in their hands. “Had they tried to enter, I don’t know what I could have done to stop them, but I couldn’t take my eyes off them, either,” wrote Alan Zimmerman, the president of the Reform congregation, about the three neo-Nazis he stared down as congregants prayed inside.

Zimmerman, in an essay published on ReformJudaism.org, said that neo-Nazis marching past the building shouted hateful slogans like “Seig Heil,” the Third Reich’s “Hail Victory” shout. He added that the synagogue had retained an armed guard, after the Charlottesville police department failed to provide the synagogue with security on Saturday. The synagogue took other precautionary measures, due to calls on far-right Web sites for the building to be burned. I agree with you absolutely.
As I posted on another thread, I saw one picture of a woman holding a Nazi flag (swastika) and it was still marked with its fold creases as it had obviously just been taken out of a package. And she was Hispanic-looking and actually kind of badly dressed, and she looked confused or unsure of herself. I kept wondering who she was, because it was so incongruous.

Oh, I’m sure that many of the people FELT intimidated. Some remembering the old days, some, younger snowflakes that are intimidated by EVERYTHING.

Like 0bama’s “Typical white granny” who would cross the street to avoid walking close to black men, I’m sure that some of those people went out the back door because they didn’t want to have to see people who may or may not have wished them ill.

But barring photos or videos of them carrying signs about killing Jews, or shouting anti-jewish slogans at them, I imagine this is more imagination than threat.

according to Southern Poverty Klan estimated at about 6000 in the entire US to give you an idea. not sure about neo-Nazis. there was a klan gathering same place a month ago with several hundred klansmen and over 1000 protestors. i grew up in the South and when the klan would have a march or whatever, people in community stayed home - and it was a non-event. it only encourages them when they get notoriety. and of course most of these people were not from C’ville at all - outside agitators from left and right.

Why the hell do they need to do that? Jews lie. Shocking. Catholics lie. Buddhists lie. The story sounds perfectly feasible. But if somebody reads it and decides that it's also feasible that a lefty liberal -- which most Reformed Jews are -- might make up a story to get involved in the narrative, whatever. Doesn't really matter much, does it?

I know Jews. I have been to Synagogue. I don’t ascribe any nuanced integrity to them. They are just a likely to lie as any other group. I think this is just as likely to have not happened as to have happened. But if it did happen... where are the pics? Everyone has a camera today. Are you telling me that no one had the presence of mind to document a clear effort to intimidate a Jewish congregation? Doubt it.
