Democrats worry about political fallout from county soda pop tax
Chicago Tribune ^ | August 11, 2017 | by Rick Pearson and Hal Dardick

Concern about the political effects of a deeply unpopular county pop tax — on top of recent state and city tax increases — on Thursday hung over the first day of Cook County Democrats' endorsement session for next year's primary election.

Northwest Side Ald. Nicholas Sposato, 38th, said he expects some backlash against the pop tax "down the road in the election next year." People complaining to him about the tax "are blaming the Democrats," he said, adding that the income tax increase would compound the problem.

Democrats last month overrode Gov. Bruce Rauner's veto of a state income tax rate hike from 3.75 percent to 4.95 percent, a move made to end a two-year state budget stalemate and try to balance the state's books.

"It certainly will affect the party," Sposato said. "There will be some backlash for it."

Even elected officials who don't serve on the County Board and had no role in enacting the penny-per-ounce beverage levy are getting heat.

"People at the grocery store are asking me why I voted for it," said one Democratic elected official who doesn't serve at the county level and asked not to be identified to avoid conflict with party leaders. "There is a combination effect. You've got this tax, the city putting on taxes, the state income tax. There may be a backlash."

Scumbags, I hope they all lose. Nasty jerks siphon money into their pockets and then tax stuff so they can keep the criminal activity going.

The voters are okay with the killing fields of Chicago. But a tax on soda is too much. Pols just don’t understand there are still limits to what their voting fodder will accept.

The state should control everything that you think say or do because you are too stupid to decide things for yourself. That’s always been the DNC party platform. Why should they be ashamed of it?

If this were 1789 France these slimy bastard Chicago democrats would be lined up in a slow moving line to madamoseille Guillotine. They are that bad.

I don’t think the Democrats have anything to worry about, I don’t see Cook county going Republican in my lifetime. There are a great number of those that are registered Democrats who believe since they are registered as Democrats they must always vote for the Democrat.

Evidently the Feds are getting involved. It is not legal to charge the tax for SNAP recipients.

Well, doncha know that a soda tax is a “tax on the rich”? Outside of an occasional RC can of pop from the Harold’s Chicken Shack vending machine, do po’ folk really drink soda? It’s mostly rich folks adding Schweppes to their Scotch ... right?

I don’t think they care about political backlash. They get away with everything. Look at the democrats from the last eight years. The amount of treason they’ve gotten away with is unbelievable and none of them are in prison.

Which forces me to ask: Why is the world can you pay for pop with food stamps. At least steaks and lobster are nutritious. But pop? Sorry, staples should be the only food for welfare from how on.

Nosing around a bit, it looks like Philly collects the tax directly from the distributers versus a tax at the cash register.

Did they set up a difference between wholesale and retail? I know in Philly they made a big deal that the customer wasn't paying the tax: it was BIG SODA and the city councilmen were shocked, shocked that retail prices went up rather than the wholesalers and retailers absorbing the price increase.

I think a mock Tea Party is in order.

Dump a ton of cans of soda in the Chicago River. That might get their attention.

ahh, yes, that is typical Pennsylvania Political Thinking.

Tax some EEEEEVIL rich corporation, and the little guy will never have to pay. The last Robber Baron died 75 years ago, but the electorate STILL thinks this way.
