A new Urban Institute study on food insecurity aims to measure just how many college students go hungry.
And while the figures released by the Urban Institute may be alarming, critics say they are too low, especially when it comes to hunger on campuses throughout California.
Right now, the process of applying for and receiving food can be confusing, students say, and many who got free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch as K-12 students suddenly find themselves struggling to navigate the system in college.
In the last couple of years, the state has made it easier for students to apply for food stamps and for colleges to identify which students might need help, and there is some movement to do the same at the national level. Esteban, the Berkeley student, was able to enroll in CalFresh, the state’s food assistance program, and says he can focus on school now that he no longer worries about where he’s going to find his next meal.
The state recently allocated several million dollars each for the UC, CSU and community college systems to build up their response to the problem of hunger on campus and reach out to students.

People earning college degrees who can’t manage to make out welfare forms? It isn’t as if they were in cursive writing or required algebra or anything tough like that...

Their college experience is designed to enshrine dependency as a way of life.
I can remember going hungry a few times.
I attended on a full athletic scholarship which paid for everything plus I had a student job in the evening.
The best thing about the scholarship was the training table. It was only at supper but was all you could eat and twice a week we got steaks, good ones too.
I would eat a hearty meal and take maybe 6 ice cream sandwiches home with me. I lived off campus. For breakfast I would eat two of the ICSs then for lunch the rest of them. Then supper would repeat.
In my last year my eligibility ran out and I had to get by on the student job. As I said, I went hungry a few times before graduation.
Well, at least in San Francisco, they can eat all the free bananas they want.
When I was getting my degree, I thought a feast was 1/4 round stake, all the brown rice I could eat, fresh tomato and green pepper. Could not have cost much and was nutritious.
Where my free stuff at?
I thought it said “full of Angry Students” and I said Yeah...no kidding.
So what?
Maybe they should get a job? The economy is beginning to recover from the Great Obama Depression, and even a part time gig would put grub on the table
that is STEAK.
But they have plenty of money to buy cell phones, beer, booze, pot and all sorts of other things..........................
