I can remember going hungry a few times.
I attended on a full athletic scholarship which paid for everything plus I had a student job in the evening.
The best thing about the scholarship was the training table. It was only at supper but was all you could eat and twice a week we got steaks, good ones too.
I would eat a hearty meal and take maybe 6 ice cream sandwiches home with me. I lived off campus. For breakfast I would eat two of the ICSs then for lunch the rest of them. Then supper would repeat.
In my last year my eligibility ran out and I had to get by on the student job. As I said, I went hungry a few times before graduation.
I lived for a week on Campbell’s chicken noodle soup, Van Camp’s pork and beans, and a bag of day-old rolls I swiped from a fraternity hog roast.
In between barely sustainable part-time jobs, I recycled cans and bottles and would pick up clean uneaten food left on tables in the student union. I recall being mocked several times by wealthier students but I did what I had to do.
