Nissan Workers in Mississippi Reject Union Bid by U.A.W.

In a test of labor’s ability to expand its reach in the South, workers at a Nissan plant in Mississippi have overwhelmingly rejected a bid to unionize.

Out of roughly 3,500 employees at the Canton-based plant who voted Thursday and Friday, more than 60 percent opposed the union. It was an emphatic coda to a yearslong organizing effort underwritten by the United Automobile Workers, which has been repeatedly frustrated in its efforts to organize major auto plants in the region.

The union’s high-paid officials are no doubt cringing over the timing of the indictment’s release. Employees at Nissan ’s Mississippi plant are voting this week on whether to join the UAW. Those automotive workers would do well to ask if this is the kind of outfit they want to hand a chunk of their wages to.

The indictment claims Mr. Iacobelli availed himself of National Training Center money, buying limited edition gold Montblanc pens and a $350,000 Ferrari. He also allegedly installed a swimming pool, outdoor kitchen and spa at his Michigan home, renovations that cost $375,000, and paid off a relative’s student loans.

The feds say they and other conspirators skimmed millions from the UAW National Training Center, a tax-exempt, Fiat Chrysler-funded entity that was supposed to help union automotive workers get job training.

Nope. Wrong state. No Hondas made in MS.

And by the way, when the Nissan plant at Canton first went on-line about ten years ago, they had terrible quality control problems.

That was probably a result of the terrible levels of education among the local labor pool. But it seems that the plant has gradually improved and now runs at an acceptable level of quality.

I worked for a non-union General Electric shop for 14 years and they did the same thing. They provided us with the full union benefit package but without the union. Every time they closed a union shop guess who got the work?

I’m willing to give GM another look, but only because Trump was elected. I would still have a hard time getting past that to buy another GM, though.

Not in Mississippi, except for federal employees. And ditto for most other Southern states.

Moreover, even though federal employees can unionize, the federal unions are not allowed collective bargaining privileges. So their power and influence is nothing like the situation with those state and local governments that allow unionized collective bargaining for their employees.

Nissan is a mystery to me. They can make a great car for several years so often that their name is compared with Honda and Toyota but they suddenly turn out pieces of junk for a few years. They then get their quality back for a while until they do it again. It’s almost like they were run by the government.

Government thrive because 1.) The public officials who okay the contracts do not have their money in the game. That comes courtesy of the taxpayer. And 2.) There is almost always a nice little scheme where the unions make significant campaign contributions to the very same public officials who negotiate the contracts.

Much less than in my youth growing up in a large construction company owning family

Back then unions were prevalent in construction even in Mississippi in cities

The coast was always union

And so forth

The reason the auto companies are in the South is to escape the unions up north.

The #1 export of the state of Alabama these days is automible and automobile parts. Not timber and timber products anymore.

The GDP of Alabama is greater than that of Iran....with 5 times less people.

We're even competing with Boeing building Airbus commercial passenger aircraft.

I retired from Texas Instruments and always thought that TI's personnel department functioned like a union regarding their employees. (Difficult to fire people)
