CSU eliminates remedial classes in push to improve graduation rates

Aiming to help thousands of students who get sidetracked in developmental courses that don’t count toward their degrees, California State University will do away next year with traditional remedial education.

In an executive order issued Wednesday night, Chancellor Timothy White directed the 23-campus system to overhaul by fall 2018 its curriculum for students found to be unprepared for college-level English and math. About 39 percent of CSU’s incoming freshmen, or 25,000 students, are required to take remedial classes for no credit before they can begin their general education.

University officials argue this is no longer the right approach in an era of mounting concerns over college affordability. They have already undertaken an ambitious plan to more than double four-year graduation rates to 40 percent by 2025.

“The idea that students have to take courses that don’t count toward their degree costs them money and costs them time,” said James Minor, senior strategist for academic success and inclusive excellence at CSU.

Minor added that the separate remediation track sends an “unintended message” to students, many of whom get discouraged that are they not progressing toward their ultimate goal of graduation. Nearly 3,300 freshmen who entered in fall 2015 did not complete their remedial classes and were ineligible to return to school.

“It really invites first-generation students to question whether or not they really belong in college,” Minor said.

So, now you'll be paying $100k for no education at all.

Rather, the taxpayer will because you're too stupid to pass basic high school math and still can't convert fractions to decimal.

Many tech companies don't even ask about degrees anymore. They know they are worthless for many disciplines.

Oh, and you're taking up a seat in Algebra/Math 101...a PAYING seat...and can't even do long division.

In eight years you'll be providing services to some rich white people. Hopefully those are not medical services.

If the colleges say they are unaffordable, why don’t they reduce the tuition?

More of the same, just more open.

Colleges weren’t about whether you knew the material even in the seventies and probably long before that.

it’s easy to improve graduation rates if you just pass anyone who gives you a check.

So unpreparedness will essentially count for credit. All that matters is turning out worthless degrees.

If your IQ is less than 120, you’re too stupid to receive a government backed student loan.

This entire problem could be solved by getting government out of the student loan business.

Make your case to Wells Fargo or B of A. Let them make a business decision on whether they believe you’ll be able to pay it back.

This will cut in half, at least, the number of freshmen each year.

In other words...

They were too stupid and lazy to handle even the easiest courses...

So they quit.

Now they work at McDs and demand "a living wage".

Just wow...

but they might receive additional tutoring or take the course at a slower pace, stretched over multiple semesters. A summer program for incoming freshmen who need extra preparation will be redesigned to count for credit.

CSU also plans to eliminate the placement tests it used to determine students’ readiness for college-level work. Skills assessments will instead be based on high school grades and standardized test scores.

Lower the standards!

Lower the standards again!

And again!

Lower the standards until the degree is completely worthless!

This is part of the decay/decadence of Western Civilization.

The greatest incentive to learn English composition before entering the University of California system was the dreaded Subject A test. Fail it, and you were required to take the remedial course in Subject A, at your expense, and time, until you passed. It was the scourge of the Engineering students. Very effective, and yes, it wasn't FAIR.

Since ANY college “class” costs money and takes time, why not just award a “diploma” to anyone who wants it?

I mean, it’s not like today’s “students” go to “college” expecting to LEARN something useful.

And very few “professors” KNOW something useful that would justify paying them their salaries.

Therefore, closing these glorified kindergartens would stop the waste.

Haha…they got out of high school without learning to read and now they can have a college degree and remain illiterate. What a farce “education” has become in the USA! No wonder businesses are fighting to keep their pipeline to India flowing with people who are better prepared.

They’ve even dumbed that down.
With this new pronouncement, the dumbed-down requirement is dead.

One of the best job interview “questions” a prospective employer can ask is:

What do you know a lot about? Cars?
Write me a story about cars. (Or fashion, music etc.).

80% of College graduates cannot write.

You cannot discern the intended meaning from their email!

It is the most fundamental of all academic skills.
