National security adviser H.R. McMaster has started to clean house at the National Security Council, firing two staffers originally hired by Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser shown the door for lying about his communications with Russia, and loyal to Trump Chief Strategist Steve Bannon.
Last week, McMaster fired Derek Harvey, the National Security Council's top official for the Middle East, The Atlantic reports.
And this week, McMaster lowered the boom on Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the National Security Council's senior director for intelligence.
The White House said of Cohen-Watnick's firing that McMaster "has determined that, at this time, a different set of experiences is best-suited to carrying that work forward."
A senior administration official familiar with the matter told The Atlantic that Cohen-Watnick is expected to be offered another job within the administration.
The Atlantic says McMaster tried to can Cohen-Watnick earlier this year, but was turned down by President Donald Trump following the intervention of Bannon and the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
The axings come as Trump's appointees appear to be flexing their political muscles more and more.

If he wants a General, there are plenty out there who were fired by Obama. And Admirals too.
Nothing on drudge about this. If there was any doubt what team he is playing for now it is gone.
I have some idea who he shouldn’t hire. Anyone who served in the Obama or Clinton Admin.
And anyone who the MSM/DNC,including the usual RINOs, say is a good choice.
“OK, so after McMaster who should Trump choose as national security advisor?”
How about 0bama’s general Dempsey? ...just kidding.
OK, so after McMaster who should Trump choose as national security advisor?
I don’t know. Maybe somebody not recommended by John McCain???
Trump is really still learning The vastness of the luciferian globalist conspiracy that dominates establishment Washington....Trump will probably never be invited to the Bohemian Grove...
1. appointing McMasters.
2. allowing a special prosecutor.
3. appointing Mueller.
4. not firing McCabe.
This lays the groundwork for:
1. not keeping these spy agencies honest.
2. continued leaks.
3. impeachment.
Why are the right wing publications hitting on this man? Something is not right here.
Fire him and everyone on his email list.

If Trump doesn't see that by now there's no helping him. Impeachment is what he will get.
Why are these McMaster types summarily fired.
In my humble opinion, why is Trump running around yappin’ about firing Sessions, but NOT actually firing people like this McMaster character????
INQUIRING MINDS WOULD LIKE TO KNOW!!
Anyone McNasty is for, I’d be AGAINST!!
That's a bit fatalistic. You think Trump spends his days playing golf ignorant of what is going on around him?
So the only question now is “Why are they being fired?”
bhawwwhahahahhahahahahha
nice try, no cigar
He's wasting valuable time. I forgot to also mention that Steve Wasserman, the brother of Debbie Wasserman Shultz, is in charge of the investigation of the Awan scandal where he should be recused.
Trump is getting ready to go on a vacation for 17 days while the whole heating cooling system is changed out in the WH.
What do you bet that they are going to scour out that place looking for bugs.
Trump's Presidency would be a great one if he only had the ear of the first two of the four, but that isn't going to happen.
If McMaster is still in place, I think it’s because he’s doing a good job, he’s doing what the president wants him to do.
Some people need to be fired. A lot of folks here seem to be making three assumptions:
1) The people who need to be fired (ex. McMaster) are keeping their jobs.
2) The people who are being fired (ex. Derek Harvey, Ezra Cohen-Watnick) should have been kept in place.
3) Trump is being bamboozled by wily underlings who are smarter than he is.
I would suggest that all three of these assumptions may be incorrect.
I would further note that the three seemed linked to me — either the 3 are all correct or the three are all wrong. I don’t see much chance that some of them are true and some are false.
Do you trust President Trump? I do.
