Australian scientists at the Bureau of Meteorology ordered a review of temperature recording instruments after the government agency was caught tampering with temperature logs in several locations.
Agency officials admit that the problem with instruments recording low temperatures likely happened in several locations throughout Australia, but they refuse to admit to manipulating temperature readings. The BOM located missing logs in Goulburn and the Snow Mountains, both of which are in New South Wales.
Meteorologist Lance Pidgeon watched the 13 degrees Fahrenheit Goulburn recording from July 2 disappear from the bureaus website. The temperature readings fluctuated briefly and then disappeared from the governments website.
The temperature dropped to minus 10 (13 degrees Fahrenheit), stayed there for some time and then it changed to minus 10.4 (14 degrees Fahrenheit) and then it disappeared, Pidgeon said, adding that he notified scientist Jennifer Marohasy about the problem, who then brought the readings to the attention of the bureau.(snip)
The bureaus quality control system, designed to filter out spurious low or high values was set at minus 10 minimum for Goulburn which is why the record automatically adjusted, a bureau spokeswoman told reporters(snip)
Failure to observe the low temperatures had been interpreted by a member of the community in such a way as to imply the bureau sought to manipulate the data record, Johnson said, according to The Australian. I categorically reject this implication.
Marohasy, for her part, told reporters that Johnsons claims are nearly impossible to believe given that there are screen shots that show the very low temperatures before being quality assured out. It could take several weeks before the equipment is eventually tested, reviewed and ready for service, Johnson said.(snip)
Marohasey said BOM adjustments changed Aussie temperature records from a slight cooling trend to one of dramatic warming over the past century.

A lot of science isn’t science. It’s just political ideology.
hmmm I wonder why this would be? /sarc
didgeriDON’T
no surprise
I notice that they are calling for an internal review. How about an external review with some critics among the reviewers.
They didn’t do it on purpose they always drop low temperatures because they could be wrong. They never drop high ones because that would be just wrong. /s
this is a huge story, but is being censored by almost all Australian MSM.
the review is a sham:
1 Aug: Australian: Graham Lloyd: External experts in BoM review
Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg has rejected calls for an independent investigation of the Bureau of Meteorologys temperature data collection and handling but promises to release findings of an in-house review.
Mr Frydenberg said on Tuesday he had spoken to BoM chief executive Andrew Johnson and instructed that two independent external experts be included on the review panel.
We are treating this issue seriously and I look forward to a set of recommendations which ensures ongoing public confidence in the integrity of the bureaus data collection and temperature records, he said.
When the review is complete I will make the findings public....
Documents released under Freedom of Information have shown former prime minister Tony Abbott pushed for a forensic audit of its performance. However, the review was scaled back after lobbying by then environment minister Greg Hunt

Ya don’t say......
Crikey!!!
Interesting excuse - “the software did it”
Sort of ignoring the efforts of those who wrote the software...:^)
I can see highlighting high/low numbers for manual review, but to let the software do it automatically is really poor record keeping.
