Mississippi police kill man while serving warrant at wrong house

July 26 (UPI) -- Close to midnight on Sunday, Southaven, Miss., police arrived at the wrong house to serve an arrest warrant and shot a man dead in his own home, according to reports.

Ismael Lopez, 41, was shot dead late Sunday night after he checked to see who was at his front door. But the police were supposed to be across the street to serve an arrest warrant for Samuel Pearman, who was wanted on an assault charge, reported WREG.

"Someone didn't take the time to analyze the address," said Murray Wells, the attorney representing Lopez's family. "This is incredibly tragic and embarrassing to this police department that they can't read house numbers."

DeSoto County Prosecutor John Champion said it was "possible" that police went to the wrong house and confirmed that Lopez's name was not on the warrant.

This will be ruled a justifiable, though tragic, homicide...........

“But police officers said......”

was most likely absolute BS.

“Analyze the address”? One can’t help but wonder with some of the low-caliber situations that occur every day (and not just in police work) if Affirmative Action has indeed turned us into an Idiocracy.

I’m sure Mr. Lopez won’t make the mistake of being across the street from a guy who is supposed to be arrested again!

It was midnight and the man heard violent knocking at his front door?

Last time that happened to me, I went out the back door and flanked the door banger. And "yes", I was armed. Turned out not to be a criminal (either private-sector or government) ... but it gave me an edge.

I grew up in that part of Mississippi back in the 50’s and 60’s.
We lived way out in a rural area.
My grandfather would always have his gun in his hand whenever someone banged on the door after dark, and he did not open the door.
He would question the person through the door................

That’s not what the article said. Police said he was holding a gun and did not drop it when ordered to do so.

Wipe the shoe polish off your nose, you are embarrassing yourself.

THEY EXECUTED HI!!!

Speaking on behalf of the Lopez family, Jordan Castillo, 23, told the Commercial Appeal that Lopez’s wife disputed the police version of events. He said police began firing through a closed door and that Lopez never picked up his firearm, which she said was found by police in the usual spot he always keeps it in the living room.

A white boomer babe has little to fear from police when they pull you over. It's happened to me several times; be polite, follow instructions, smile and put them at ease. I've never been ticketed despite my offenses. Terrible story, though.

One of my neighbors got shot through his door doing that by some hoodlums. He’s the one that suggested a window.

Particularly if they actually shot through the door.

Along with that, the police officer(s) should be protected...

Protected? Or prosecuted?

I think they heard a noise that “startled” them.

Then someone slapped their police car.

That’s all it takes. Time to kill someone.

I have been thinking about this and similar situations for my next house. I have already decided that I need to go to a ICF poured concrete exterior 8” wall structure or dome home with compressed earth blocks covered in Grancrete and high fiber cement mix

Now seriously considering bullet resistant exterior doors and first floor windows. Wife says I am paranoid - I am planning for TEOTWAWKI / Armageddon / civil unrest and even the zombie apocalypse

uh...ya...difficult concept for cops...

odd numbers on the left side of the street,
even numbers on the right side of the street.

double check the house number and confirm it WITH ALL MEMBERS OF THE TEAM!

I have observed, while watching ‘Cops’ that when UC are conducting a sting operation be it drugs or prostitute, there is a lack of ANY uniformed Police around and I would think that if I were ‘legally’ (or not) armed that when the ‘pro’ excuses herself and someone barges through the door that ‘I’ would be in a heap of trouble as I definitely will be turning around with ‘something’ in my hand.. Especially if she had ‘demanded’ we go to the room of her choice.

Funny how I would more than likely get ‘fired’ if I delivered an important ‘package’ to the wrong address yet you hear of these situations popping up and everyone is supposed to just say ‘that is life’ sorry about that.
