A leading psychiatry group has told its members they should not feel bound by a longstanding rule against commenting publicly on the mental state of public figures even the president.
The statement, an email this month from the executive committee of the American Psychoanalytic Association to its 3,500 members, represents the first significant crack in the professions decades-old united front aimed at preventing experts from discussing the psychiatric aspects of politicians behavior. It will likely make many of its members feel more comfortable speaking openly about President Trumps mental health.
The impetus for the email was belief in the value of psychoanalytic knowledge in explaining human behavior, said psychoanalytic association past president Dr. Prudence Gourguechon, a psychiatrist in Chicago. We dont want to prohibit our members from using their knowledge responsibly.

Aren’t psychiatrists more likely to commit suicide than those in most other professions? I’ve never had the pleasure of being treated by one, but my wife has. All they really do is prescribe psych meds.
Psychiatry is a field that one goes into when one can’t handle any of the other medical fields. Kind of like teachers.
That fits with my observations. Every person who I met in college who was pursuing a psych degree was buck-crazy.
Most of these “psychiatrists” are crazier than their own patients.
Certainly they are consumed with smoldering, unrelenting hatred towards conservatives and Trump supporters.
Their “responsible comments” will be 100% anti-Trump. My, what a surprise.......
Didn’t Spock, at some brief point, admit he was the one responsible for raising a nation of brats?
It is a widely accepted truth that psychiatrists often go into the profession to attempt self-analysis.
Add this to the pastor’s warning and Brennon....the American public is being readied.
Not all. But a goodly, a very goodly, proportion. Most in the Democratic Party, of course.
Yes, he did admit he had been wrong about many things, a generation or two after the damage had been done.
This from a profession that tells us that transgenderism is “normal.”
True story: when I was in college and working part-time in a coffee shop, two of my regular customers were studying to become psychiatrists. They were friends, always came in together, both very effeminate in their mannerisms. BOTH started cross-dressing and were planning to have sex change operations. This was back in 1973!!!!
I was only 17 years old, had been brought up in a “normal” nice protective home, I had no idea what these two guys were about. They were nice enough, though, always left a tip, but JUST D@MN!!
Wait. Those machines they use to burn brains out with electricity are very scientific. Even torturers in Cubas recognize the scientific uses of ECT machines.
And they use laser beams now instead of dime store ice picks to chop up the brain. See? It’s all very scientific.
Yeah, well I used to be a dental hygienist and it was an oft repeated fact that dentists had the second highest rate of suicide of all professionals. Psychiatrists had the first.
You’d think they’d be spending their time working on the violent, psychotic left 24/7. They need the most help with all the problems they cause on a daily basis.
Psychoanalysis - is that still around?.....
The APA membership is as phoney as Sigmund Freud’s notes.
Was Spock trying to replicate on this planet the conditions on Vulcan?
Fixed it.
