Republican Gov. Chris Christie signed a law Friday making New Jersey the third state to raise its smoking age to 21.
Christie cited the strain on the health care system caused by tobacco-related illnesses. He also noted his mother died from the effects of smoking.
"By raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco products to 21, we are giving young people more time to develop a maturity and better understanding of how dangerous smoking can be and that it is better to not start smoking in the first place," Christie wrote.

I wonder what Lucky Strike and the Greatest Generation think of this decision.
Back when DC wasn’t populated with traitors and grifters.
It’s always nice to have some fat guy from Joisy lecture the public on good health habits. Did this statement of wisdom come from a closed beach, or the regular office?
Now another thing is kinda gettin’ on my nerves...
another thing that’s kinda gettin’ on my nerves is this
national 21 drinking age
Huh? what do ya think about that?
A bunch of malarkey
whatever malarkey is man
it’s a whole bunch of it..
you know if Uncle Sam finally gets the war he’s lookin for
you think he’s gonna be draftin’ 21 year olds?
No man they’re gonna be draftin’ 18 and 19 year olds
but ya can’t buy beer
you can get married and screw yourself up real good
but ya can’t buy beer
ya can charge 8 million dollars on the master charge
but ya can’t buy beer
you can vote for one fool or another
but ya can’t buy beer
I don’t understand why people even start smoking now with the health risks known, but this seems like a waste to me. I get it with alcohol because alcohol is mind altering - you don’t want 18 year old high school students buying alcohol.
He’ll legalize pot next, Pot, gambling and donuts,
Mmmmm Krispy Dreams...
When I was a kid maybe 8-9 years old I remember being sent to the store by various people to buy cigarettes or beer for them. FUNJ,
Nothing better to do than F over young people. Hope it wakes them wake up to the evils of government.
Back in the day when I was in high school in Dubuque,IA I was buying mixed drinks in Iowa and bottles of hard liquor in East Dubuque, IL when I was 16. Gambling.,,black jack, poker, slots were all out in the open in East Dubuque. Cigars and cigarettes no issue. Everyone was paid off, everyone was happy and there were no related problems. That was 60 years ago.How the country has turned to shit. I feel sorry for the youth...wish they would rebel because I would join them.
Not as dangerous as morbid obesity. Got any laws to curb that behavior, Cristie Creme?
The same folks who decides twelve year Olds could cut off body parts if they feel like they are not male or female as defined by their chromosomes.
Obisity costs more and obese people live almost as long as those who keep their weight under control. Smokers die early enough that they save Social Security, private pensions, and Medicare” trillions of dollars.
Apparently in some countries children can drink but only under supervision of an adult.
And when they get in office they start eating tax dollars like donuts! /s
They can get married, sign contracts, buy a house, and get custody of a child(happened in my family)before they are 21 but they can’t buy cigarettes or beer.
How is this even legal?

Yes, the fat fascist from New Jersey telling 18-20 year olds in the armed forces they can risk their lives protecting him, but they can’t smoke.
I must have been living under a rock. I thought they raised the smoking age to 21 years ago.
It has always infuriated me that one can be conscripted for war and not able to buy a beer, and now cigarettes.
