I was shocked by what I saw on CSPAN a few days ago. There was a session in the House composed of a small group of both Republicans and Democrats debating whether a small town in Alaska should get money for an eleven mile road to connect up to civilization.
The Alaskans were Republicans and the Democrats consisted of Niki Tsongas (Massachusetts), Grijalva (Arizona) and a couple more Democrats from other states. The Alaskans asked for the road so that people could get to an airport to access a hospital. Niki Tsongas said no because it would harm the environment and wildlife. Grijalva said no because the town had been given a hydroplane boat. The Alaskan said that the hydroplane had been given to the town by Bill Clinton it would break down and besides the people had not asked for a hydroplane but an eleven miles road. They have been trying to get this road built since the Clinton years twenty years ago!
I learned that 90% of Alaska was controlled by the Federal Government! People in Alaska have to beg and plead just to get a road from people like Tsongas and Grijalva who have the luxury of driving anywhere they want anytime they want.
The Democrats got their way and denied the money to the Alaskans. What was that about? Greed or spite because they lost or maybe some of both? Yet this is the party that is always praising themselves for being the most compassionate people of all.
What town?
How many billions in foreign aid is spent by the US government, and they can't build/fund a road in Alaska?
Yeah, total National outrage, road. Oh my.
Eleven miles, oh my.
Yeah, I’m all jazzed up about it.

I know many up there want to be disconnected from civilization. But if the town’s people want it, the state of Alaska should built it.
They need to find an “endangered species” near their town, then Tsongas will want the road so that the government can inspect it’s “habitat” and levy fines on anyone encroaching on it. Better still, call the City of Toronto and have them quote on building the road. I understand that they needed $65,000-$150,000 to build seven or eight steps and a handrail to serve a public garden that a local resident did for $500.
I have to ask the obvious question, why did this road for a small town require federal dollars? Shouldn’t the state or county pay for it?
Actually, nevermind, I should have read the whole thing. It’s seriously messed up that western states are under so much federal control.
There is a lot more to building and maintaining a road in Alaska than most other places...
This article seems short on facts and long on emotion.
Why doesn’t Alaska build its own 11 mile road if the feds are dragging their feet?
Here’s some background - town is King Cove, AK:
Feds to Alaskans: No road for humans, lots of land for animals

Here’s Sally Jewel’s comment (I heard about it when it happened - totally disgusting):
She stood up in the gymnasium and told those kids, Ive listened to your stories, now I have to listen to the animals, Democratic state Rep. Bob Herron told a local television station. You could have heard a pin drop in that gymnasium.
If they are asking Congress, then it is almost certain that the State of Alaska can do nothing without US Government approval. Most likely this is Federal-controlled land and as such requires 'zoning approval' for a road.
Sorry, I didn’t get the name.
Never do anything for America; do only that which helps "our party" and hurts the other party.
Call that partisanship, and THAT is where Ameica has gone off track. Where every solution has become a political partisan decision, not what is in America's best interests.
Maybe they could get a refund on “The Bridge To Nowhere” and use that money to build their road.
Ninety percent of Alaska is under Federal control.
maybe they could disassemble the Bridge to Nowhere and use it to cut costs.
You are correct - the land is in a Federal Refuge & the Feds thus far value wildlife over human life.
Remember Obama said “We will punish our enemies and reward our friends”.
