The California state Assembly passed a $3-billion subsidy program for electric vehicles, dwarfing the existing program. The bill is now in the state Senate. If passed, it will head to Governor Jerry Brown, who has not yet indicated if hed sign what is ostensibly an effort to put EV sales into high gear, but below the surface appears to be a Tesla bailout.
Tesla will soon hit the limit of the federal tax rebates, which are good for the first 200,000 EVs sold in the US per manufacturer beginning in December 2009 (IRS explanation). In the second quarter after the manufacturer hits the limit, the subsidy gets cut in half, from $7,500 to $3,750; two quarters later, it gets cut to $1,875. Two quarters later, it goes to zero.
Given Teslas ambitious US sales forecast for its Model 3, it will hit the 200,000 vehicle limit in 2018, after which the phase-out begins. A year later, the subsidies are gone. Losing a $7,500 subsidy on a $35,000 car is a huge deal. No other EV manufacturer is anywhere near their 200,000 limit. Their customers are going to benefit from the subsidy; Tesla buyers wont.

They might be better paying for their Dams to be restored!
And Tesla will give money to the Democrat politicians.
That’s one of the ways Democrats steal money from taxpayers to give to themselves.
Sounds like Tesla will take the money and then shut down just like all of Obama’s Green Job companies ,LOL
How many illegals has Tesla agreed to hire in return?
Dear God, give us Bankrtupcy of government.
Its the only limit scheming politicians will know

No, we don’t need to restore dams. We don’t need coal or gas or nuclear power plants, either.
That’s because electricity come from the wall socket. How naive of you!
I dunno, maybe it is me; but, I get the whiff of P.T. Barnum whenever I am reading an article about Elon Musk.
——Tesla will give money to-—
Tesla has given money to......
Pols want cash up front
Ping.
There’s a Liberal born every minute...
Who’s paying for this? Will We the People in other states have to foot the bill once CA bellies up?
Which is why I don’t like Tesla.
The name is an insult.
Nicola Tesla was WAY too smart to fall for any of this.
Well Californians have a loads of money (so they keep telling us) so it’s theirs to spend how they like I guess.
But how much in Federal subsidies are going to CA? Money is fungible.
Not quite, but here’s the “real” solution.

Hey, if it’s good enough for Bernie Sanders, who am I to be critical?
