CHICAGO (CBS) A mothers eyes are swollen shut from crying after the fatal shooting of a 9-year-old boy in the East Side neighborhood on the Far South Side, a community activist said.
Gustavo Garcia was in an SUV with a 31-year-old man at 11:13 p.m. Friday, traveling west in the 3500 block of East 97th Street, when a gray car pulled up next to them and someone inside opened fire, Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiners office said.
The boy was shot in the back and taken to Comer Childrens Hospital, where he died, authorities said. He lived in the South Chicago neighborhood. Members of his family have declined to comment.
However, community activist Andrew Holmes said the boy was approaching his 10th birthday next month. Though he didnt know Gustavo, he said hes learned through the family that Gustavo loved playing video games, loved his classmates and looked forward to going back to Arnold Mireles Academy.
He wasnt an outside kid, Holmes said. He was homebound.
Holmes is pleading with anyone with surveillance footage that might have captured the shooting to come forward. He said Gustavos mother has no idea or knowledge of what led to the incident. He said her eyes are nearly swollen shut from crying.
Shes in shock, Holmes said. Total shock.
The man inside the car with Gustavo was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn after being shot in the back, face and chest, according to police.
Police have said no suspects are in custody.

Good thing gun control keeps the streets safe in Chicago.
Oh, wait...
Move to Baghdad where it’s safer or at least move to a town where criminals are afraid of armed citizens and the public cooperates with police.
B L M!!!!
What, no riots about BLM??
I think Trump should jump into this, and call a meeting of Mayors, Governors, and community representatives to have a public discussion on how to address and stop this carnage. It’s too easy for the media to bury this stuff, and for politicians to ignore it.
This is not Trump’s problem. Get rid of the welfare state.
but if we did have some high level White House discussion of violence and shootings in our cities?
The vast majority of this violence in Chicago is committed by feral young black men.
The liberals and media consider it racist to talk about certain inconvenient truths about who the perpetrators of the bulk of the violence and shootings are.
Any plans coming out of such a meeting, such as to reinforce police resources against people who commit the violence, would be condemned as racist by the media and the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons of the world.
So, it’s quite possible the result would be, that the discussion ends, because of fears of being called racist by talking about the problems in the first place.
I definitely agree, but this is why it needs to be done, in my opinion. Let the world see that the left cares more about its political posturing than it does about minority lives - a point that I think is largely true.
Meanwhile BLM rants about how blacks are being killed.
More Gun Free zone signs - what’s the matter with the mayor anyway? Has he no compassion?
The situation in Chicago constantly reminds me of the last line in the theme song from Monk -
"Its a jungle out there"
It all goes back to the welfare state. single moms with lots of kids get bigger checks. Baby Fathers not living their lives as Fathers to their children. The church has become a relic of bygone days in Black culture.
I pray for revival in the black community, in their churches, with shame coming upon many that have wasted their own lives and in turn contributed to wasted lives of the next generation.
I am expecting big things to happen with Dr. Ben Carson as a catalyst for action.
Just like using the “N” word ,,,, only blacks are allowed to kill one another and have it be accepted by them .
Pathetic
Without cops life is , as Hobbes said “life outside society would be ‘solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short”.
Enjoy life without the Leviathan.
Not in the news because no Whitey to blame.
