The parents of terminally-ill baby Charlie Gard have walked out of a High Court hearing to decide if he should undergo treatment.
Charlie's father Chris Gard stood up and said: "I thought this was supposed to be independent," as the couple left the courtroom about two hours into today's hearing.
Mr Gard and his partner Connie Yates are arguing they should be allowed to take give experimental treatment to their 11-month-old for a severe degenerative genetic disorder.
Specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London, where Charlie is being cared for, say that Charlie has already suffered catastrophic brain damage and there is no prospect for any meaningful recovery.
They say further treatment may cause him pain and that life-support keeping Charlie alive should be stopped.

Love those death panels. I wonder how we can translate that to Obamacare and hang it around the Democrats necks.
I’d get my kid out of there if I had to leave dead men to do it.

The Gards should file a lawsuit at the Hague. England, by not allowing one of their citizens to seek help outside the country has condemned the child to death. This precedent leaves the door open for authorities to basically say anyone can be killed for whatever reason.
It is something my grandparents experienced at a small facility called Dachau.
What you don’t seem to understand is
first, it is justly up to the parents, who love and care for their baby what happens to their baby, not mindless, senseless government an entity that CANNOT care about anything but its own power and coercion, and,
second, the government healthcare death panel has already decreed death for this baby, so the parents have nothing to lose by trying.
It is rightly and justly up to the parents, not anyone else.
Enough to know there’s too many including here on FR that excuse the government healthcare death panel and the tyranny of calling the baby a property of the Crown.
Maybe you should rethink any affection you have for government healthcare which is rotten to the core and in America, completely unconstitutional.
And who are you to pontificate that there is no hope for the child? Are you a doctor? I’m just guessing here, but if it were YOUR child, you’d be singing a different tune. This is as good a hill to die on as any.
Whoever takes Charlie will be agreeing to sustain ‘the body’ of Charlie via machinery.... and why the parents have difficulty finding those who will.....
I don't put any weight in what the Vatican may or not say regarding this child.....they have not examined him...and even then I would not send my child there.
You may not like what I'm saying but this child is in catostr0phic condition with no hope ever of having anything remotely close to a normal life...or even life itself in the sense of what that actually is. I do not support sustaining a dying body from a disease that would have taken him months ago...which is destroying his organs, brain and every part of this child....and there is nothing to stop this...it 'IS' the disease and natural progress of it...of which Charlie has the most severe and rarest and why no child with it has been treated with the drugs that are used for lesser conditions.
You can go by the hype and all the emotional and political hype going on if you want.....I will not support what they are doing to this childs body.....never. It's cruel and abusive and that's simply from a medical position. He is dying if already not dead while they are sustaining this child in the world that none can say he isn't suffering in.. I would not do that to my child.
It is my understanding that the British government will not allow them to take the baby to America. I'm not seeing a lot of defense of the UK's tyranny on FR.
‘The reason other hospitals would not take Charlie, aside from the advanced stages of his illness, is this is a case ripe for the parents to sue.....and be assured they have given every indication this will be forthcoming.’
You said the threat of a lawsuit was the reason other hospitals would not take Charlie. But drs in the US have been volunteering to treat him for months—someone posted that the first offer came in January. More recently the Vatican children’s hospital offered to take Charlie.
I’m just pointing out that the parents are not so litigious as to preclude a willingness and eagerness by other drs/hospitals to take Charlie’s case.
Many of the answers I get are about how it would be against the law for the parents to get their baby outta there or that the baby would die.
The death panel has already decreed the baby’s death so what does that matter, and breaking unjust law and tyranny is a moral right and duty. Seems that quite a few who have answered me on this don’t seem to get that.
Have you ever removed an intubation tube?
While your view point is the ideal you are not dealing with reality
My guess is security guards would stop them and call the police...
I wonder how far from the hospital to a US consulate where they can ask for asylum?
I have seen videos of little Charlie. I have never seen a more serene expression on a sleeping child’s face. Charlie has several issues which you enumerated; but pain clearly isn’t one of them.
Charlie would need a portable ventilator to be moved safely. He can’t breathe on his own. For the outcome to be anything but Charlie’s death, the hospital will have to cooperate.
Tell that to the parents. You speak like a true defender of socialized medicine. It’s justly and morally up to the parents. Let them deal with the details. They’ll do it better than that mindless government machine and their death panels.
Would you let security guards keep you from saving your child?
If you care enough about something you’re not to going to let the “what ifs” stop you.
Teresa May is no Winston Churchill
You can slam me all you want.
You did not answer my question because you never have. Do it wrong and it will be memorable in a bad way
You may not like it. You can work to change it. But reality is reality. Your solution is not a solution. They would not be allowed on any transport. The would not be allowed into this country.
Like it or not without permission they cannot just take their child
From what I understand, they are proposing using a completely untested "treatment" on him. Giving chemicals without any real knowledge of how they will affect a human body could very well cause him pain.
