Why a Warming Arctic May Be Causing Colder U.S. Winters
National Geographic ^ | July 11, 2017 | By Sarah Gibbens

When a U.S. Republican senator threw a snowball onto the Senate floor in late February of 2015, he used it to underscore his belief that humanmade climate change was an alarmist conclusion. The snowball had been rolled from the capital grounds in Washington D.C., which, at the time, was experiencing an uncharacteristically cold winter.

If global warming was real, he postured, how could the nation's capital experience such severe cold?

Uncharacteristically cold winters, however, just might be one of the most hard felt effects of climate change, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience by a team of researchers.

The study found that unusually cold temperatures in northern North America and lower precipitation in the south central U.S. all coincided with periods of warmer Arctic weather.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers analyzed how teleconnections in the Arctic cause cooler winters in North America. Teleconnections are largescale weather anomalies that influence weather across continents and span large portions of the atmosphere.

Anna Michalak, a researcher at the Carnegie Institution for Science, was involved in creating the model that was used to collect data for the study's findings. She explained that the massive system of climate models, called CMIP5, creates a large dataset that allows researchers to study the interconnectedness between activity on Earth and the atmosphere.

While the specific repercussions of warmer Arctic seasons and the severity at which those repercussions will be felt requires further research, the study effectively underscores the interconnectedness of Earth's atmosphere.

Speaking about how human influence changes weather patterns, Machalak added, "Winters could be harsher; flooding is more intense; droughts are more frequent... By emitting greenhouse gasses, we're not just warming temperatures, we're perturbing the Earth's entire system."

I have a theory that the DOW will plummet unless a billion dollars is transferred to my bank account to keep the economy in balance.

Naive and gullible people might see the DOW going up and conclude that my theory has been falsified...but not so fast....the theory really is "market change". If the market goes up, down, or sideways it is always evidence my concerns are true. And 97% of those that I certify as having a valid opinion on this subject agree with me so there can be no debate. Its science people. Empirical evidence.

DON'T PUT IT OFF!!! We are headed for disaster unless the billion dollars is sent soon. The financial damage could be so bad the Earth could end up devoid of all products including food and clothing and shelter. The point of no return is coming fast...we each have a duty to lobby congress to allocate a billion dollars for AndyTheBear's bank account immediately. Unless you hate your children and future generations and want them wiped out. Campaign for my cause, or be guilty of genocide as well as being anti-science!

Massive system of climate models? Yes we know who developed those models and we are not impressed nor surprised with the expected fraudulent results.

Perhaps if you studied the actual raw data instead of using a corrupt "data set" which has been totally rendered useless through manipulation of historic temperature data you would reach a more trustworthy conclusion.

It must be great to make a prediction after the fact and call it science.

LOL They can't even pull that one off. None of their models are predictive when applied to historical past actual temperatures.

If you are going to argue that warmer winters are due to global warming dont be surprised when colder winters are used to argue against global warming. Also warmists have argued that warmer winters AND colder winters are evidence of GW.

Same here in the Blue Ridge. I’m laying on the wood this year just in case.

Your story terrifies me! I just knew we were doomed, and your account is first hand, reliable proof that we are going to die in a firestorm of regret and shame. Why oh why didn’t we listen to our actors!!?!

“Why a Warming Arctic May Be Causing Colder U.S. Winters”
*******************************************
I suppose that explains why a scientific expedition to the Arctic was cancelled recently, as the Canadian ice breaker had to instead deploy there to keep the sea lanes open for shipping due to the heavy, thick ice.

The people conducting these studies are devoid of logic and facts if they only create models to support their AGW ideas!

Did anyone else here hear that the ice is so thick in the Arctic that Canadian icebreakers mare getting stuck?

I’m not sure where I just read that.
