In 2013, one storyline of the raucous and unpredictable Democratic mayoral primary was Christine Quinns bid to become the first woman elected Mayor of New York City. Then the City Council Speaker and the early frontrunner in the race, Quinn largely avoided talking about that history-making potential. Running as the continuity-with-change candidate based on her close working relationship with outgoing Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Quinn finished third in a crowded primary field behind the eventual winner of the election, Bill de Blasio.
As de Blasio seeks reelection this year, he appears set to face Republican Nicole Malliotakis in the general election -- de Blasio is a heavy favorite in his Democratic primary and Malliotakis became the presumptive GOP nominee after her toughest competition, real estate executive Paul Massey, dropped from the race last week.
I forgot to add the article on the link. I apologize.
I thought that was Hillary’s next job.
I bet we don’t hear about the female angle.
Malliaotakis needs to make an ad about Comrade DeBloodio’s trip to Europe to protest. The theme is that it’s time New York had a mayor who cares about you.
Ping.
She's of Cuban and Greek ancestry.
Yep. A Mayor who cares about you, more than the thug anarchists.
She has both the Republican and Conservative lines.
Good looking, well put together. Liberal voters will hate her.
If she wins, she can serve up to 12 years in Gracie Mansion. She’ll be a rising star.
We should all donate to her campaign.
Wilhelm needs to go! Worst Mayor in NY history?
3rd worst in the past 90 years. John Lindsay still holds the title for worst, since the cultural/social collapse that led to a million residents (namely, the middle class) fleeing en masse. 2nd goes to David Dinkins with the epic-level crime rate (2,000 murders per year) and decision to spend most of his time out at the tennis courts (the most egregious example of a hands-off approach to governing).
Kaiser Wilhelm de Blasio the Red has not wrecked the city to the extent Lindsay did, nor has the crime rate skyrocketed to Dinkins-level proportions. But given 8-12 years, he could begin to actively move the city in that direction again.
He’s already moved the city “in that direction.” The decay over just the last two years convinces me he will give both Dinkins and Lindsey a run for the title of worst ever if he manages to get reelected.
That would be an enormous accomplishment if he managed to return the murder rate back to the early ‘90s levels or drove a million productive citizens out of the city. I’m not discounting that he is an awful Mayor, because he is, only that there would be no tolerance at this point to return it back to the days when it was an absolute hellhole.
We'll find out on November 7th.
I take it that you do not live in the city.
My parents were part of that million-person exodus, with me in utero.
