ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) As many in the United States celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, some minorities have mixed feelings about the revelry of fireworks and parades in an atmosphere of tension on several fronts.
How do you celebrate during what some people of color consider troubling times?
Blacks, Latinos and immigrant rights advocates say the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election, recent non-convictions of police officers charged in the shootings of black men, and the stepped-up detentions of immigrants and refugees for deportation have them questioning equality and the promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in the United States.

In the 1st place, Mr. Contreras is wrong in his ethnic/racial profiling-I’m of Latino ancestry-and I’m Caucasian, not a “person of color”-the majority of those with Latino ancestry are Caucasian, too-Latino is an ethnic group, not a race. My family has been right here since the 1780’s-so I think I’m qualified to tell any person of any race or ethnic group-White, Black, Asian-Latino, German, Spanish, Irish-whatever-you can stop whining for stuff, get up off your ass and work like the rest of us-act like a proud American-or get the f*** out of our country-now...
To every other proud American-Happy 4th of July...
GET OUT OF MY COUNTRY YOU PATHETIC WHINERS!!!!!
You should make your response a whole other thread. Ageless truisms of real freedom.
Well said!
As a minority, I get so tired of these condescending leftist a-holes. There really is nothing to question about the promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness if you fully understand our Constitution and are a legal citizen. It applies to all legal citizens, regardless of race.
Just more race-baiting, fake news, nonsense coming from the enemedia which haven’t a clue about our Constitution. Instead, they abuse their power in order to undermine it.
Happy 4th to all freedom loving Americans!

I am sick and tired of these whining assholes. Most black folks live better than I do, and I am not complaining.
People who spend every penny they can get their hands the minute they get their hands on it on on bling, tattoos, Escalades and hoes will never have “wealth” no matter how much of other peoples’ money you steal and give to them.
If you’re so scared and OPPRESSED living in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, move BACK to your homeland and IMPROVE it for yourselves!
My little community decided to end it's Independence Day fireworks display, a local tradition nearly a century old, when gangs of young blacks went on a rampage, attacking white families at the fireworks display.
They are as uncivilized as they were in Africa and a danger to the community.
How does life in the USA compare to the life these minorities would have in their ancestral homelands where their ethnic group is the majority and in control of things?
It reads:”promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness “
the “pursuit” part is up to the individual - they skip over that word and substitute “guarantee of provided” happiness
The left doesn’t want us to have a good Independence day. They hate this country, so that is unacceptable for them.
The crybabies have gotten trillions from us, and still they hate us. I propose a new country, somewhere in Africa. All the non-White crybabies go there and run their own country.
Progressive “blacks, latinos and immigrant rights advocates” are constantly bitching. Why should today be any different.
Just a guess, but it’s probably mostly the illegals and welfare leeches that are feeling a bit edgy; mostly about ICE and Border Patrol. To my mind, LL&PoH are only guaranteed to legals and citizens.
The illegal immigrants weren’t born here, they weren’t invited here and no one’s keeping them here. And I’m supposed to feel bad because they don’t approve of the country they came to illegally?
What No. 2 wrote!!!! Yes!
Just live your life in the best way possible. Get a job; stay focused; establish long term relationships; avoid breaking the law; and grant due respect to our country, it’s flag and our God.
Agitprop central.
Actually, they probably were, by Obie and the RATs.

On July 4 we recognize the Declaration of Independence defining the American Dream as inalienable natural rights including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Constitution establishes a government embodying these rights by promoting the general welfare, and securing the blessings of liberty.
Whatever the Constitution further defines relies upon natural human rights independent of and superior to any government construction. They are intangible property sourced in opinion, religion, communications, use of abilities to labor physically and mentally, and in conscience. Only by application of these inherent rights can one truly possess material things.
The American Dream never meant government largess ensuring college funds, retirement accounts, savings, affordable health care, home ownership, lifetime employment, corporate wealth, political careers, and union benefits.
Politicians become patricians offer enchanting elements of material security such as described above, while obscuring subservience to administrative laws and regulations vastly increasing their power. Their legislation and rules negate our Bill of Rights confiscating intangible human freedoms for these apparitions.
Such devices are the soft underbelly of our Constitution. Under English Common Law, basic to our Constitution, a person is innocent and not subject to the penalties of the law until proved guilty. Administrative laws and regulations are like Roman Civil Law which subjects people to penalties and restrictions until they find legal means to extricate themselves.
People now routinely make unconscious Faustian bargains to exchange their human essence for illusions of material comfort. However, freedom requires uncompromising adherence to an American ideal of inherent natural rights.
