Alaska boy, 11, shoots bear charging fishing party
Fox News ^ | July 1,2017

Elliot Clark, 11, was walking through the woods near Game Creek last week with his three family members and three dogs when the bear came out and charged them, The Juneau Empire reported.

The bear ran through two of the men, pushing them to the side of the trail, leaving Elliot and his cousin left in its path, Elliot's father, Lucas, said.

"There was four of them in a line. My son was third," Elliot's father said. "The bear came down the trail at them, fella in the front, who was his uncle, the bear was on him so quickly that he didn't have time to take his rifle off his shoulder."

The boy then raised his pump action shotgun and shot the bear with birdshot.

His father said the first shot did nothing, but two more downed the bear and finishing shots by the boy and his uncle killed it.

"That first shot hit him in the shoulder and did absolutely nothing," he said. "The next shot hit him in the nose and traveled down through the neck."

Elliot's father said not getting around to putting a sling on his son's gun might have saved their lives, as he was able to quickly ready himself.

"He was carrying it in his hands rather than on his shoulder," he said. "That was the problem with the other ones, when the bear came at his uncle, he had his rifle on his shoulder and the bear was very close, so he couldn't get it off in time."

The incident was the first Defense of Life or Property killing in the Hoonah area this year, Alaska State Trooper

Not to confuse things, but they call Grizzlies “Brown Bears” up there. It wasn’t an adult but still good sized.

Or at least distract it, and don’t be calling me Shirley.

How much was the bear charging? Was it a reasonable price?

(Someone had to do it...)

That was a baby. A Male grizzly is the most ferocious animal on Earth , can be 9 feet tall , 1500 pounds. a grizzly is pound for pound one of the strongest animal on Earth , tiny baby bear is easily stronger than a man.

A large coastal male of this size may stand up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) tall on its hind legs and be up to 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) at the shoulder.[19]

My money is the Full grown male grizzly not that kid with bird shot.

Every now and then a story like this comes along that restores our hope that we have not yet reached the tipping point.

Kid needs to make himself one of these...

Real bear claw necklace with the real story to go with it.

He will be prying the girls off of himself with a crowbar.

That bear is brown but I can’t tell if it’s the Grizzly subspecies. It’s not a large one, though.

In early California men wagered on contests between difference species of animals. Grizzly Bear against a fighting bull didn’t work out because the bear would shatter the bull’s skull with a quick swipe of its paw. The Grizzly Bear’s paws and claws are considerably stronger than a Kodiak’s or even a Polar Bear’s.

They decided to make it more interesting and brought in African Lions to fight the Grizzlies. The result was the same.

“...bird shot.”

What you don’t seem to understand is that at point blank range, the effects of bird shot and a slug are nearly indistinguishable.

The rest of what you said reads like a third grade writing assignment.

When I was stationed up there in the 70’s all of us newbies to Alaska went down an got a 375H&H to carry and we noticed a buch of locals carried just a double barrel 12 ga that was cut as short as legal, 18.5” minimum for most, length of pull was reduced and the toe of the stock was shaved to clear easily any foul weather gear you might be wearing.

First round was a 00 Buck and second was a slug. Slung it muzzle down.

We asked why not a riot gun or the 5 round capacity most of our rifles held.

Locals said we’d be lucky to get 1 shot off if we were really lucky. So the old double barrel I carried for 2 years up there was an American Gun Company Knickerbocker, sawed down to minimum legal length , cleaned of all rust, degreased and given a few coats of rust-oleum . Served me well.....

There are two kinds of bears in North America, black bears and brown bears. All black bears, whatever color, have brown snouts. Brown bears are grizzlies, Kodiaks, all large bears. Kodiaks live on Kodiak island and their diet grows them especially huge, but they are grizzlies/brown bears all the same.

Kodiak is a larger subset of grizzly (brown bear). They are both ursus horribilis.

Bears (black bears around here) and moose, they are just there all the sudden. You never hear a thing.
