In Austin, the air smells of tacos and trees — and city-state conflict

But here in Texas, the bigger battle over tree ordinances is whether they represent a form of local government overreach. Gov. Greg Abbott (R), citing grave worries about “socialistic” behavior in the state’s liberal cities, has called on Texas lawmakers to gather next month for a special session that will consider a host of bills aimed at curtailing local power on issues ranging from taxation to collecting union dues.

Texas presents perhaps the most dramatic example of the increasingly acrimonious relationship between red-state leaders and their blue city centers, which have moved aggressively to expand environmental regulations and social programs often against the grain of their states.

Republican state leaders across the country have responded to the widening cultural gulf by passing legislation preempting local laws. The best-known example is North Carolina’s “bathroom bill,” which was partially reversed this year. It was originally aimed at undercutting Charlotte’s efforts to expand civil rights laws to include LGBT people and to prevent cities from setting their own minimum wage.

Every state has their liberal enclave. But Austin has one of the best live-music scenes in the country, as well as top-notch eateries and nightlife.

Here in WI, Madison is the butt of liberal jokes as well, but they have a great scene as well. FReepers should rightfully criticize liberalism for the policies, but when it comes to the arts, community, entertainment, and restaurants - I'm talking about the liberals engaging in the market and being creative - they do give conservatives a run for their money.

Madison is much more liberal than Austin.

I’ll bet Austin is considering how to pass a travel ban against the rest of the state over the transgender bathroom bill...

I fought 3 Jury trials with the same judge, same prosecutor, same City Bureaucrats trying to fine me hundreds of thousands of dollars. You see, the City has their own “Environmental” Court and “Environmental” police force.

With a Liberal City of Austin jury each time, the City lost!

And that’s just one story of mine. There are many more. The common denominator? The City always lost! But, they don’t care. Their lawyers are FREE. Incompetent but free!

The job of a government attorney is not to convict you or to fine you, their job is to bankrupt you.

legal fees for me on the three trials were approximately $25,000.00. So, they got their pound of flesh!

I seriously doubt Houston’s shipping anybody anywhere. It may not be as lib as weird Austin, but it’s controlled by the democrat machine.

Sigh. Sam Houston did not own slaves and opposed the secession. Just kidding - somebody had to set me right on this earlier.

That’s because California’s moonbats have made their state uninhabitable. So they’ve migrated to Austin to repeat the process.

“So, they got their pound of flesh!”

It is tough to do battle with a team of lawyers that have access to unlimited government funds.

Don’t doubt a Democrat’s ability to shift a problem to someone else, if the opportunity presents itself. Including to one of their own. Houston Dems I’m sure are happy to ship their homeless to Austin if they don’t turn around and ship ‘em right back.

This is the second year running that the high-pressure hell dome has been disrupted from building: witness the bearable temps and even rain in July!

As for music, I’ve never understood why they call it music.

Why would you say that?
What would you call it?

Serious question.

May be from California but the beautiful owner is a strong Christian.

That are not not mutually exclusive.

Many of us in California are both sane and "normal."

In Austin, being from California is like having ebola.

I worked for the local builder's association when I lived here in the mid eighties. Got a ringside view of the local politics as a result. The Dems thought they could limit growth by not expanding infrastructure. The town grew anyway and Austin has been playing catch-up ever since. The lib attitude was, I have my nice hippie pad in South Austin, shut the door now.

Just because libs can create a great music scene, it doesn't mean they can run anything other than their mouths. I now live in the county just to the north and it is very well-run, with advance planning for infrastructure improvements. It also has Sun City where the average net worth among residents is over a million dollars. A bunch of rich elderly people paying property tax with no kids in schools. Bingo.
