Schumer Slammed for Blocking Senate Hearing on Obama 'Unmasking'

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley on Wednesday slammed Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for using a rare procedure to block a classified briefing on the Obama administration's steps to "unmask" members of the Trump campaign and transition teams.

Committee members told The Washington Times they planned to use the session with intelligence officials to find out how agencies identified Americans whose communications with foreigners outside the United States were monitored.

"Today, the Judiciary Committee was set to hear from senior intelligence officials about highly sensitive intelligence gathering authorities that will soon require action from Congress," Grassley, the Iowa Republican, said in a statement posted on Twitter.

"It's disturbing and reckless for the minority leader to block the briefing," he added, referring to the New York Democrat. "We've seen too many recent reminders of how unsafe the world is today.

"This is no time to play politics with our national security," Grassley said.

Under Senate rules, Schumer can object to committees holding meetings beyond the first two hours after the Senate's day begins.

No new date for the briefing had been scheduled.

Last week, Grassley rebuked Schumer twice for using the same tactic to block two Judiciary Committee actions: a hearing on Russian involvement in last year's presidential election and a session concerning legislation to block human trafficking.

But notice, he used the available tools to advance an agenda. Do you think a Republican would do that? They can’t even advance an agenda when they hold all the cards.

And the Lib/Prog folks surely have no objections to Schumer’s tactics, but Schumer, his pals & public supporters, hypocrites all. would be in a rage over such tactics if the shoe was on the other foot.

So the minority leader can find a way to block things and the majority leader can’t find a way around it. Says a lot more about the incompetence of Grassley than Schumer.

Somehow if the situation were reversed, I think Schumer would find a way around it.

Repubs simply don’t know how to play hardball.

The objection that Schumer made is independent of the Committee. The objection stops ALL Committee hearings.

As for kicking him off, each party chooses which of its members go to which committees. The committees don't control their own membership. At best, it takes the whole Senate to reject a member for assignment to a committee. Senate Committees, read too the embedded link to committee assignment process.

"President Trump needs to subpoena those records as he holds the power to do so..."

No, he's the President. He needs to take a motorcade, along with some trusted FBI agents, and look at them. He is not required to give notice. He can go get them in the middle of the night if he wants because he is the freaking President.

The only thing that will curtail this is to force them to work.

What McConnell should do is announce that the Senate is recessing for July 4th week as usual so the President can make as many recess appointments as he wishes. Then, the Senate will work a seven day schedule until further notice.

A man can dream...can’t he?
