~ Hall of Heroes ~ Harold O. Messerschmidt Info from here. |
|
Harold O. Messerschmidt (October 20, 1923 September 17, 1944) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decorationthe Medal of Honorfor his actions in World War II. Messerschmidt joined the Army from Chester, Pennsylvania in May 1943, and by September 17, 1944 was serving as a Sergeant in Company L, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. During a German attack on that day, near Radden, France, he led and encouraged his men until everyone in his unit had been killed or wounded. Ignoring his own wounds, he continued to fight the enemy force alone in hand to hand combat until he was killed. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor ten months later, on July 17, 1946. Messerschmidt, aged 20 or 21 at his death, was buried in Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery, Barnesville, Pennsylvania. |
Sergeant Messerschmidt's official Medal of Honor citation reads: He displayed conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty. Braving machinegun, machine pistol, and rifle fire, he moved fearlessly and calmly from man to man along his 40-yard squad front, encouraging each to hold against the overwhelming assault of a fanatical foe surging up the hillside. Knocked to the ground by a burst from an enemy automatic weapon, he immediately jumped to his feet, and ignoring his grave wounds, fired his submachine gun at the enemy that was now upon them, killing 5 and wounding many others before his ammunition was spent. Virtually surrounded by a frenzied foe and all of his squad now casualties, he elected to fight alone, using his empty submachine gun as a bludgeon against his assailants. Spotting 1 of the enemy about to kill a wounded comrade, he felled the German with a blow of his weapon. Seeing friendly reinforcements running up the hill, he continued furiously to wield his empty gun against the foe in a new attack, and it was thus that he made the supreme sacrifice. Sgt. Messerschmidt's sustained heroism in hand-to-hand combat with superior enemy forces was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service. |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

Good evening, radu...how goes it with the kiddies? Have they started “bothering” their roommate?
Thought maybe we could get a bit of rain, but just now the sun is coming out.

Ha Ha Ha!
She even brings her own sheets and pillows so I don’t have to launder them.

If it’s too icky out, we will go to the pond and just go out on the island trail. It’s breezy out there.

Howdy, radu!
It was a good day....and the WeatherBug lied to us! It was “only” supposed to get up to 93 but it reached at least 100 before cooling off a bit...to 89. LOL!
I must have barely missed you last night. I decided, since it was Saturday night, to head out a bit earlier. Well, at least I didn’t bonk my head on a pew this morning! :)
How has your nice weekend gone? Did you get a lot done? Buckwheat still improving? I sure hope so!

The lil girlies are fat and sassy these days. Rambunctious lil kittens for sure. Ellie has shocked me. I figured once the kittens were let loose from their box she’d stay either on top of the dresser or in a windowsill out of their reach. But she stays on the floor a lot, watching them play. I get the feeling she’ll end up playing with them before much longer. I’m just glad she’s taken this so well.
We had a sprinkle a little earlier and more rain is coming this way. Looks like it’ll fizzle out before it gets. :-(

Driven by God
June 19, 2017
May he turn our hearts to him, to walk in obedience to him.
1 Kings 8:58
A few months ago I received an email inviting me to join a community of driven people. I decided to look up the word driven, and I learned that a driven person is someone highly motivated to succeed and who will work hard to achieve his goals.
Is it good to be a driven person? There is a test that never fails: Do it all for the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). Many times we do things for self-glory. After the flood in Noahs day, a group of people decided to build a tower in order to make a name for themselves (Gen. 11:4). They wanted to be famous and avoid being scattered all over the world. Because they were not doing it for God's glory, though, they were erroneously driven.
In contrast, when King Solomon dedicated the ark of the covenant and the newly constructed temple, he said, I have built the temple for the Name of the Lord (1 Kings 8:20). Then he prayed, May he turn our hearts to him, to walk in obedience to him and keep the commands (v. 58).
When our greatest desire is to bring glory to God and walk in obedience, we become driven people who seek to love and serve Jesus in the power of the Spirit. Let our prayer echo Solomons. May our hearts be fully committed to the Lord our God, to live by his decrees and obey his commands (v. 61).
Father, give me the desire to obey You and do everything for Your glory.
For help in your spiritual growth, read God at the Center at discoveryseries.org/hp152.
Do everything for the glory of God.
As you work hard to achieve your goals, ask God to give you a humble and obedient heart that is fully committed to Him.

Bad WeatherBug! BAD! Glad you had a good day any way, despite that heat.
No head-bonking the pews is a good thing! :-)
I got here late last night and figured I’d missed everyone but wanted to get a greeting and ‘Happy Father’s Day’ in at least.
Been a busy weekend but I got what I wanted to accomplish done. Tonight, my butt is parked, Blue Oyster Cult is blasting through the speakers, and I’m enjoying my last night alone. Hubby will get home sometime tomorrow.
Buckwheat’s done a GREAT turnaround! The Convenia shot cleared up his head so he’s eating normally again and the cortisone shot helped a lot with his walking. Don’t know what happened to him at the clinic that left him unable to walk for a couple of days but he’s past it now. WHEW!

I think sometimes being in those cages is hard on older animals. I know my dogs used to be really stiff when they first got back from being boarded when we had to go out of town and couldn’t take them.
Glad you got a lot done and good for you having some rockin’ time all to yourself! Hope kitties like BOC. LOL!

I still think he was picked up wrong by one of the girls who works there. I’ve handled him with kid gloves since the dog attack because of the damage done to his back and hips. He can’t be picked up like a healthy cat. But he’s doing much better now and that’s what counts. And I’d say everyone who works there now knows to be extra careful with him if he ever has to go back. I was not nice when I called about him not being able to walk.
I kinda wish I hadn’t gotten quite as much done as I did. I’m paying for it today. LOL! But it’s out of the way now and I don’t have to think about it again for a while.
Too bad for kittehs tonight if they don’t like BOC. I usually have to listen to music on the headphones so as to not disturb Hubby. I like my music LOUD.
Must not disturb the cats too much. They’re all flopped like roadkill in here right now.

I think it’s genetic. LOL
We had a brief sprinkle late this afternoon and I thought we’d get a good dose tonight but that round fizzled out before it got here. There’s still a chance we’ll get something later in the morning but we’ll see what happens. We could use a dose.

I think it has finally cooled off here. I hope. But until we get our repairs done...and half the town, then I guess I won’t wish for rain just yet. LOL!
Glad you got a bit, but maybe more will come later. How is the corn looking?

No, y’all don’t need any more rain until repairs are finished. Don’t need soggy houses added to existing damage. Did you get anyone to check out your roof yet?
The corn is gorgeous. It tasseled Friday so it won’t be long before pretty ears are on the stalks. We just to keep getting decent rainfall so the kernels will plump up.

That’s awesome that it’s coming along so well! I do hope it continues so you have a great crop this year!
There are going to be about 10,000 claims so, no, no one has come yet. They’ve even opened a group claim station at our football stadium so people can get it done. They are saying this is the worst storm that Odessa has ever had as far as damages. Everyone I know has had some damage or the other. Really sad and frustrating. However, I reminded hubby that I’m going to Ft Worth for NYTexan’s memorial on the 30th, so he needs to do something to make his car driveable. Right now the back window is covered in black plastic and the interior is covered in glass bits. sigh

Yeowy! That’s a lot of claims but as large as that hail was, it isn’t much of a surprise. It’ll be a surprise if you don’t have some roof damage.
Hope your hubby gets the car fixed by the 30th. Otherwise you’ll have to get a rental. You can’t drive his car with the window so messed up.
