Yesterdays news, aside from the usual Trump obstructing, colluding, and making money on his investments, included a ship collision. As described by ABC, a Navy destroyer collides with container ship off coast of Japan. NBC had a similar headline, Navy destroyer collides with ship off Japan.
Fox News worded their headline a little differently, US Navy involved in collision. As did CNN saying, Navy destroyer collision off Japan.
It was a terrible accident as US sailors are missing and potentially injured or worse, but my point is regarding the choice of words describing what happened.

Collision occurred 65 miles off the Japanese coast. Doubtful that a harbor pilot was at the helm of either vessel.
Port to Port... Red to Red... the DDG was hit on the Starboard side (green) and the merchie was hit on the Port side (red), which means the DDG was the give way vessel. Both ships should have made obvious course and/or speed changes to pass port to port at a safe distance. Most Night/CO Standing orders state no less than 1 NM.
Very Good Point!
a don’t ignore the “coincidence” that JFK’s middle name was Fitzgerald.
It’s got to mean something. Or am I looking for a conspiracy where there is none?
Not necessarily. If the merchant was located 2 points abaft the beam, then the merchant was an overtaking vessel and was bound to steer clear.
If that was the case (and that would appear to be so from the fact that the merchant was damaged on the port side of the bow), then they were headed the same direction on parallel courses. The DDG should have altered course to port to a slightly diverging course until the merchant had passed clear ahead, then returned to base course.
Then it wandered to report of a dirty bomb on a cargo ship.
Nothing would surprise me....And I remember what my bro always said...If it's not US Flagged...don't trust it. They don't believe in rules.
Rooskies?
The photos show it wasn’t a “T-Bone” strike.
It was a “glancing” strike.
The damage to the container ship is on the left front.
A “T-Bone” strike would have damage on the right front, also.
Crossing Situation When two power-driven vessels are crossing so as to involve risk of collision, the vessel which has the other on her own starboard side shall keep out of the way and shall, if the circumstances of the case admit, avoid crossing ahead of the other vessel
Another place says (with exceptions):
INTERNATIONAL Steering and Sailing Rules Responsibilities Between Vessels Except where Rules 9, 10 and 13 otherwise require: (a) A power-driven vessel underway shall keep out of the way of:
(ii) a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver;
An AP article I read said the merchant ship was 4 times the size of the destroyer.
No, you are definitely on the right track. Many believe it goes much deeper than just JFK.
“The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called ‘gitche gumee’
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early
The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ship’s bell rang
Could it be the north wind they’d been feelin’?
The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the captain did too,
T’was the witch of November come stealin’
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of November came slashin’
When afternoon came it was freezin’ rain
In the face of a hurricane west wind
When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin’
Fellas, it’s too rough to feed ya
At seven pm a main hatchway caved in, he said
Fellas, it’s been good t’know ya
The captain wired in he had water comin’ in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Does any one know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searches all say they’d have made Whitefish Bay
If they’d put fifteen more miles behind her
They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters
Lake Huron rolls, superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man’s dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered
In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
In the maritime sailors’ cathedral
The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call ‘gitche gumee’
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early
More likely: Blame the American Navy.
Japan at times has been very anti-America. How does an American warship travel sideways into a Japanese ship. I did’t know we had that type of capability on our ships.
A British newspaper showed the route of the container ship.
It was traveling in a very erratic manner.
Thank you.
Yeah I take back the “ t- boned”
Given the size of the container ship if had proceeded to t-bone the Fitz it would have cut her in half or crushed and sunk her
Looks like it was moving pretty slow and bearing off to starboard at the time it hit
Werent the captains of these wessels in communication?
Best explanation so far...
Aaaand this too... Have only seen written description of very erratic moves by the container vessel
Notice there has been no official comment yet from the USG
Its exactly the same way the blur distinctions in cases involving firearms. It’s intentional disinformation.
I know absolutely nothing regarding what’s involved in the navigation of ships this size, so somebody please educate me on this. Even if a visual sighting of the ships did not occur between one another, I’m assuming both are equipped with navigation and detection technology that should have alerted each ship to the presence of the other. I realize these ships can’t turn on a dime, however, there must be some type of alert mechanism that provides sufficient warning to avoid a collision. Again, I have no knowledge on this subject, so maybe I’m missing something obvious. How could an accident like this happen?
A cat could give birth to kittens in a oven but that don’t make’em a biscuit.
