Police detonate beeping packages found in busy Clermont plaza

Police on Saturday were forced to detonate three beeping packages found in the parking lot of a busy Clermont shopping center, officials said. Clermont Police were called about 5 p.m. to the Clermont Landings shopping plaza along U.S. Highway 27 after the suspicious packages were found, police spokesman Michael McMaster said. Authorities found three small, square packages in between two vehicles in the parking lot. They were beeping and about 3-inches wide, McMaster said. The bomb squad from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office was called to detonate the devices, which were later found to be small alarms wrapped in tin foil. Businesses in the plaza, which include Epic Theatres, World of Beer, Texas Roadhouse, Buffalo Wild Wings and Red Lobster, were notified about the incident. Police say they were not evacuated due to the incident. No one was injured. McMaster said police are still investigating, but as of Saturday evening no surveillance footage had been recovered and no suspects had been arrested.
