A New Zealand man named Ben Kepes unwittingly found himself without his passport, wallet, and entire carry on bag at the San Francisco International Airport this week after a flight attendant mistakenly thought his luggage was left behind by a previous flier. Kepes, who has been recounting the ordeal on Twitter, says his bag was underneath his Business Class seat while he was working on his laptop before a flight from Nashville to San Francisco when it was removed without his knowledge. As he writes, it wasn't until he was arriving at SFO that he noticed the bag was gone.

The worst part is that he was stranded in San Fransisco.
Why is this “news”? Because of the word “United”?

I don’t get it... how was it moved from underneath his seat without his knowledge???
Thought the bag was removed? Or stolen?
Way back when I first began flying United had one of the best reputations.
The employees and the service were always top notch.

I remember when it cost $2,000 to fly cross-country coach (in today’s dollars). Very nice service and seating...virtually impossible for anyone besides the wealthy to travel for anything but business. Vacations consisted of where you could reach in a day’s drive (as driving cars wasn’t that cheap either).

You're supposed to stow your stuff under the seat in front of you.
That's probably why the flight attendant assumed the bag had been left behind - there was no one sitting in the seat behind where the luggage was stashed.
How could his bag be “removed without his knowledge” from under the seat? Strange.
He most likely had a bulk head seat which means no seat in front of you. The space underneath the seat you sit on is the place for the luggage of the person behind you. The flight attendant did not make a mistake he made the mistake (if my speculation is correct). UA then made a series of blunders. The FA sounds contrite but I had a different experience.
The passenger in front of me, despite not having a bulkhead seat and therefore having a space in front of them chose to stuff their bag at my feet ( they had to bypass a metal bar at great effort). I did nothing but when they left their seat I told the FA that the bag was not mine and she took it and placed it on the jetway and said, with a wink, maybe the person will come back for it. They did but too late since the gate agent took the bag and left. I pled ignorance when the passenger in front f me asked me about the bag. But when I asked why it wasn’t placed in front of them the reply was “I wanted space for my feet”. Sweet vindication.
Yes, I remember those days, too. Flying seemed so glamorous to me as a child. Of course, in those days, often adults seemed glamorous to me. My mother would not have dreamed of leaving the house without dressing up. Now, one sees T-shirts and sweat pants everywhere. There is so much lack of dignity.
What is strange? The bag was removed and he did not know about it. Not at all strange. If the FA does not tell you then you do not know.
Funny, I don’t remember ever paying more than $100 for a ticket ($600 in todays $)
Strange to me because I was assuming he had the bag stored under the seat in front of him, and I was picturing the the stewardess leaning in to get the bag out.
Have not flown in years. In reading comments on the thread after I had made my comment, I learned a bit from others. Someone suggested he had the bag under his own seat and the stewardess removed it while in the seat behind him.
I remember looking at my grandfathers Pan Am ticket stub from LAX to Tahiti (which he bought on the same day as his travel - at the ticket counter) 40 dollar down payment, 560 dollar balance due in 90 days. That was RT as well. Business Class. This was about 1965
