Deer are generally considered one of the more benign creatures of the forest, going about their herbivorous ways in peace. But as new research shows, theres a dark side to these ungulates. Using camera traps, forensic scientists have captured unprecedented photos of deer munching on the skeletal remains of a human carcass.
Herein, we report on the first known photographic evidence of deer gnawing human remains, write the Texas State University researchers in their new study, which can be found in the Journal of Forensic Sciences. On its own, this behavior is noteworthy enough, but the finding could prove useful to forensic scientists conducting murder investigations.

A few years ago my father totaled his car hitting one of those bastards. It ran right across the highway right into his car, he said it was like watching a movie in slow motion, and this was during the DAY. Usually it happens at night. He said it was like the deer committed suicide LOL! But he was lucky, thankfully no other cars were around him. This was out by exit 68 I believe he said, on the Long Island Expressway, way way eastern Long Island New York which is absolutely loaded with deer. They have this stupid law out there that hunting is legal as long as it is not 100 yards from a house. Well guess where most of the deer are? 100 yards from houses! So they are all over the place like locusts. Actually you could kill them, I mean who would tell or know? His neighbor takes a few out every year, he just goes into his backyard into the woods, it’s crazy, they are right there.
I saw one out in the front yard this morning, pretending to browse, but I knew that she was really...sizing me up for later. They run in packs, they can’t be stopped, and they’re coming for us.
If you go down in the woods today
You’re sure of a big surprise
If you go down in the woods today
You’d better go in disguise!
They’re not after flesh they are after bone for the calcium and salts and trace minerals. Deer will gnaw shed antlers and box turtle shells, too.
I thought everyone knew this?
That is fascinating!
Probably trying to get some minerals from the bones.
Payback...
They fawn being your friend, and when you are not looking they give you the hoof!
Payback...

It took 190 days to reduce the body to a skeleton. Must not have been good eating.
Recently a deer died in a cultivated field just down the road. By the second day it was a skeleton. The third day the skull was still there. Couple days later, nothing.
On our property we find this all the time. The only thing remaining is the fur. Some animals, such as beaver, the claws are left, maybe the tail.
Crows, eagles, coyotes & turkey buzzards to the bulk of the work. From a forensic point of view, I just can’t see how the cops can find a body after just a few days.
She said for a little doe she’d let me go, so I offered her a buck.
I always knew that lovable Bambi crap was leftist media propaganda. Just like the refugees being helpless widows and orphans.
Maybe it was my ex-wife
Some years ago I was following about 4 car lengths behind my parents down a neighborhood street about 30 mph. 1100, bright clear sunshiny day. A white tail deer runs out and slams into the left back door of the car.
A wily, run away from any perceived danger snorting as it runs creature with sharp eyes and incredible hearing manages to slam into the side of a slow moving 18’ long vehicle. ???
Absolutely true. When I was 20 I had a floppy-eared, I had just made a T-bone and set it on the low coffee table and Bunya snatched it right off the plate and went to town. I stared, dumbfounded, he was eating at the little notch on top where the marrow and blood leak and harden, not the flesh itself.
That doe’s a ho,
But any ho you bag,
Means you ain’t going stag.
LOL! Just what I always thought as well, these freakin’ deer will run away at the slightest noise but a car coming down the street that ANYBODY can hear coming a block away, these deer choose to run in front of? It’s bizarre, I guess cars don’t fit in with how they evolved. Every time I go out there, I see dead deer in the street, ALL over the place. They even have a “deer detail” where the town comes around in a truck and picks up the carcasses. How crazy is that? They won’t allow hunting but they will allow deer to run in front of cars and trucks.
