A air burst at a certain altitude is what you want for an EMP attack. Precise targeting of a city center..... is not needed if you just want to fry the grid........Those South Koreans must be fried now? They’ll never use their computers again.

“North Korea before an EMP attack...”

I was thinking that too.

Well Turkey proved you can sink a Russian spy ship with nothing more than a load of sheep.

I'm a little skeptical on all this EMP stuff... it's an unproven theory. Maybe it'll work, maybe not... who knows. In any event, I think NK would still need to get the thing to go off over the right continent for it to work on the intended target... I doubt an explosion over their own coast is going to take out the US.

Frankly, I'm more concerned with them someday managing to fit a nuke to an ICBM and dropping it onto the US somewhere... with a little luck they might hit something.

I’m more concerned with these idjits blowing up all of Korea by accident from their own incompetence. “OH, HORY SHIT!!”

But don’t you still need a Re-Entry Vehicle for the Warhead? At what altitude can you detonate a warhead and create the EMP to fry the electric grid? Consider the intercontinental distance, can you still have an effective EMP at 100 miles in space? Seems pretty far away to me.

Testing a detonation in the atmosphere is different than in space at oG too.

The Friday missile blew up at 25 miles from launch, this than a minute. Does not sound like a worthwhile relevant test to me.

They have an ‘advantage’ of sorts, in that if they were to test an EMP device over their own territory, the result of knocking their country back into the Stone Age would be hardly noticeable, as they’re already pretty close to the Stone Age in many ways.

I’m not sure I buy this. Reports were that the missile was spinning out of control when it detonated. And if you were testing an EMP device, you’d do it on entry, not liftoff.

It would be awesome if it would be isolated to CA.

However, all that will happen is a mass migration to other states.

Screwed either way...

More EMP nonsense.
Someone at the Examiner has been watching too much of “The Matrix”
This is right out of the 50s Cold War.

USSR says they have (insert nonsense)
USA military says they need (insert more nonsense) to counteract USSR.

The only thing that was a REAL surprise from the USSR was the Tsar Bomb and it was mostly a propaganda tool.
Adding more U238 to the Third Stage could have easily created a 100MT weapon.

Now...could the USSR have launched the Tsar Bomb and created a REAL EMP device.
Sure assuming they could get it off the ground without exploding.
Most likely it would have detonated soon after launch.

What most people don’t think about is what made ICBM’s possible was the safety which prevented the warhead from detonating until you wanted it to.

Hard to do with all the G-force and Pogo on liquid boosters.

It’s a sub delivered EMP attack.

Wouldn't even need to be a sub, if it's a scud type missile. You could put one of those on a freighter or a fishing boat, and it could cruise close to the Pacific Coast and lob the missile. We wouldn't have much, if any, warning.

I keep seeing comments like yours regarding the NORKS and I agree with you. But, that doesn't do us any good when the grid is down, does it?

Kim doesn't care if he loses 10 or 15 million people. He counts them as expendable anyway. Fewer mouths to feed. This is a different kind of animal. Retaliation might make you feel good but it does not solve this problem, it would come too late, after the damage is done. Preemption is needed here.

It’s not that it wouldn’t make me feel good.

I just thought MAD would keep him from doing anything.

I may be very wrong judging him, but he seems to love food and girls and cars and movies.

He will likely die if he attacks us, no?

That's my point. MAD might work with the Russians and the Chinese. It won't work with this guy or probably the mullahs of Iran either.

Will he die if he attacks the US? I bet he thinks he can survive. Look what the US had to go through to run down Saddam, and nobody is talking about a ground invasion of North Korea.

No one knows how deep his deepest bunker is. The biggest bomb in the US arsenal will not penetrate a mile down. I'm sure he is banking on going to ground and staying there until the heat is off.

Do not ascribe rational thinking to this guy. He runs a slave state. We have no comprehension of how he thinks.

Agreed.

Retribution wasn’t why I mentioned the subs.

I was thinking in terms of a sane person, especially an atheist, being afraid to die.

I may have been very wrong.

And he may believe he is invincible, like you say.

A deluded hermit in a hermit country.

It’s based in pretty solid science. Both the US and the USSR conducted tests with EMP related outcomes. The US test resulted in Hawaii seeing some electric grid impact. The USSR test was even worse with a power plant catching on fire.

I worry about EMP and unconventional attack more than an actual nuke or other WMD attack.
