In many ways, President Trumps attempts to implement his hard-line immigration policies have not gone very well in his first three months. His travel ban aimed at some Muslim-majority countries has been blocked by the courts, his U.S.-Mexico border wall has gone nowhere in Congress, and he has retreated, at least for now, on his vow to target illegal immigrants brought here as children.
But one strategy that seems to be working well is fear. The number of migrants, legal and illegal, crossing into the United States has dropped markedly since Trump took office, while recent declines in the number of deportations have been reversed.
Many experts on both sides of the immigration debate attribute at least part of this shift to the use of sharp, unwelcoming rhetoric by Trump and his aides, as well as the administrations showy use of enforcement raids and public spotlighting of crimes committed by immigrants. The tactics were aimed at sending a political message to those in the country illegally or those thinking about trying to come.

The Washington Compost is #FakeNews.
I can’t help it. Anytime I see the words “Washington Post” I chuckle. Is that bad?
Whatever it takes. And the “setbacks” all come from Obama supporting left wing lunatic judges on the 9th circuit. There will be payback for those folks.
Isn’t fear of punishment the primary motivator for compliance with all criminal law since time began?
next maybe self-deportation
Fear good, terror better. I want to see thousands running screaming back to Latin America. We are a European country.
I want one way turnstiles in that wall.
My father asked me if there was a way for Trump to bring lawsuit against his own legislation in a favorable district? Do it before the liberals have a chance to take it to the 9th?
Fear is a good motivator.
Well...that and the ICE raids, which even the judges can’t stop.
Fine. Fear is getting the job done without spending taxpayer dollars. Revenue neutral I believe is what Libturds are always spouting. When a Republican is in The White House.
So it’s wrong to deter even an illegal alien who’s never been here? Ok
That Trump always trying to save money... Winning.
The Wa Po should be feeling some fear reading the comments on their website for this story......
I read the first 20 or so comments...... And looks like the Wa Po is getting told to STFU by their readers.....
So sad s/
fear yes, but
BUILD THE WALL NOW
I love how the WP cites the use of enforcement raids. What enforcement raids. The only raids have been the ones dreamt up by panicking Hispanics. Totally fake. I can’t wait until the travel stop hits a real court where the law prevails.
They just aren't quite clear on what is reality and what is symbolism and pretense. Arresting illegals is not "a political message" that represents or implies something else, it is the real, existing, "something else".
