Britain's largest national student union has told attendees of its annual conference they would face "consequences" for cheering and clapping because these forms of expression exclude deaf people.
The National Union of Students (NUS), which includes most university student unions, held a two-day conference on Tuesday.
During the conference, audience members were repeatedly warned that they must stop whooping and expressing support for a speaker because it has "serious impact" on the accessibility of the conference, The Daily Telegraph reported.
Instead of clapping, the students were advised to use "jazz hands" - a gesture when people wave their hands in the air - as it's believed to be more inclusive to people with hearing problems.

Let’s ban talking.
I know your being facetious, but doesn't the jazz hand crap exclude blind people?
Ban intelligence...it excludes the left.
1st thought...Ridiculous! Banning the clap may not be a bad idea?
Remember, you heard it first on FR!
Ban colleges because everyone doesn’t get a degree.
I’ve been half-deaf for over 30 years, and my eyes can still tell when someone is cheering me or jeering me.
My advice for this student union ... F.O.!!
(or is that B.O., being English.)
The only point of this is to keep changing the rules and scaring the sheep. Like ever-changing terminology.
Deaf people can see hands clapping.
Are the organizers going to ban deaf people from signing unless there is a speaking interpreter? Can’t exclude anyone from anything.
Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; Psalm 98:4
Now the 'inclusive' version:
Jazz hands to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant jazz hands with no music;
The insanity just keeps on growing.
How do they know, they’re deaf. Oh, they can see you clapping and they can’t see jazz hands? Hmmm.........
A site that I looked at before I got to the Gaulludet site was truly laughable. It was trying to inflate the numbers so that those suffering tinnitus were included.
I grew up with some deaf friends. They do, indeed, use jazz hands for applause at deaf schools. That was over 30 years ago.
Ban students because these snarky entitled losers offend and exclude non-students.
It isn’t a hoax..
IF I were a deaf person I’d be tremendously insulted.
Really. How annoying to be condescended to.
I fight condescension on a daily basis...an old lady, in the world’s eyes at least, I am approached by idiots who want to HELP ME...i.e., when I first moved to this town, I went to a meeting at a local charity where they presented opportunities to volunteer. The meeting was on the second floor. After the meeting I headed for the stairway when a young employee stopped me and started guiding me to the elevator.
I glared at her. “I drove by myself from Miami to Spokane last week!” I said. “What did you do?” She got the message.
In my 8th decade, I’m doing interval training at the gym, just hired a trainer to teach me free weights, take no meds, move like a teenager, everything works and nothing hurts. SO LEAVE ME THE **** ALONE.
I really love bashing do-gooders :)
Deaf people can’t clap? Who knew?
That’s it!!! No more laughing
