ANZAC DAY, April 25th

Last Post - click

Come home! Come home! The last post is sounding
for you to hear. All good soldiers know very well there
is nothing to fear while they do what is right, and forget
all the worries they have met in their duties through the
year. A soldier cannot always be great, but he can be a
gentleman and he can be a right good pal to his comrades in
his squad. So all you soldiers listen to this - Deal fair by all
and you’ll never be amiss.

Canteen Mission Statement

Showing support and boosting the morale of
our military and our allies military
and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

ANZAC War Memorial, Sydney, Australia

Anzac Day is commemorated by Australia and New Zealand on 25 April every year to remember members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who landed at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. Anzac Day is also observed in the Cook Islands, Niue, and Tonga. It is no longer observed as a national holiday in Samoa.

Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. The pride they took in that name endures to this day, and Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand.

When war broke out in 1914, Australia had been a Federal Commonwealth for only thirteen years. In 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of an Allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the Allied navies. The plan was to capture Istanbul, capital of the Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. The ANZAC force landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold strike to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stale-mate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915, the Allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian and 2,700 New Zealand soldiers died. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians and New Zealanders at home and 25 April quickly became the day on which they remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in war.

Though the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives of capturing Istanbul and knocking Turkey out of the war, the Australian and New Zealand troops' actions during the campaign bequeathed an intangible but powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as an "Anzac legend" became an important part of the national identity in both countries. This shaped the ways they viewed both their past and their future.

More ANZAC Day information

Australian poet Banjo Paterson wrote the words to "Waltzing Matilda" in January 1895 while staying at Dagworth Station, a sheep and cattle station near Winton in Central West Queensland owned by the Macpherson family. The words were written to a tune played on a zither or autoharp by 31‑year‑old Christina Macpherson, one of the family members at the station.

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

God of Nations at Thy feet,

I imagine that was scary! I always hold my breath when my MIL calls but it’s usually to remind hubby to pick up a prescription. The last few nights she’s been having trouble getting from her chair to the bed and spent Saturday night in the chair! I wish she HAD called then. But I’m sure she “didn’t want to be a bother”.

Be a bother already! Don’t do something that will hurt you! Sheesh! Last night at church her legs were really swollen. I guess hubby convinced her to call, because tonight she called to say she’d made it into bed ok. Now we’ll se if she can get back up in the morning.

I swear, if and when I’m in a bad spot, I’m going to be a pain in the butt rather than risk my health or make people fuss and worry!

Heck, we’ve gotten those calls so many times, we don’t get too freaked out when they call. BUT, at 100 years old, there’s always that chance it’ll be “The Call”. This evening, it was the usual.

Oh my gosh! Yes, she needs to be a bother! Since she called tonight, maybe y’all got that through to her. Sure hope so!

I hope so, too! I’d rather her call than the ER telling us that she’s fallen or worse! She wears an emergency button but doesn’t want to bother them either. sigh....

(GENTLE HUG & CHASTE SMOOCH RETURNED)

You WILL see more of me now that things have settled down!
I was working a lot of hours between the two jobs, and I was
so fried out that by the time I got home all I wanted to do was sleep!

Just have to keep drumming it into her head that y’all WANT her to call. With luck she’s figured that out now.

Fortunately no ER visit for Clara this time. Just a little scrape on her shin and a bruise on her arm. She was embarrassed more than hurt.

And it’s about durn time too!
I hope the drive to and from work won’t be as harrowing during winter as you’ve had to deal with. That will be another plus!

Man! I hate leaving a name off this ping list. :’{

I’m glad it was only a bump or two for Clara! Falls are so scary at their age!

Well, at any age. Few years ago I tripped over my own silly shoe and fell in the mall parking lot. I was so embarrassed and had a HUGE black eye for 2 weeks. I’m sure my customers were wondering what happened to me. LOL!

A bump or two is usually what it is. She drops things and when she bends over to attempt to pick them up, she just tumbles onto the floor. She did whack her head on the edge of the bed once and had a heck of a goose egg but she was fine. Said she didn’t even have a headache.

That was a heck of a fall if you got a black eye out of the deal. OUCH!

That lil bird is growing like a weed. Since the egg that didn’t hatch is still in the nest, it gives perspective. Hard to believe it once fit inside something so tiny.

Poor Ozols is STILL hauling moss and sticks to his nest. I feel so sorry for him not having a mate this year. He has the nest fit for a queen now.
He’s only made one trip this morning since it’s raining but it was a huge clump of moss. I hope the tree is sturdy enough to handle all the weight he’s added this year.
