“Marijuana appears to be the top (but not only) subject where “conservatives” forget they are supposed to be for limited government & states’ rights.”

Except that conserving rights and freedoms is destroyed when people refuse to exercise responsibility. Sobriety is part and parcel of exercising responsibility. Rights without Responsibility just leads to moral collapse.

So we should ban alcohol?

“Pot won by more than Romney.”

WOW! There’s a 420 bumper sticker for ya.

This is a great test issue to divide originalist freedom-lovers from old-fashioned conservatives.

On a site like this, the debate should not be over medical -vs- recreation or anything like that. It should be federal -vs- state level power.

And, of course, this should be a state-level issue.

And, of course, pot is not harmless. So what?

Is alcohol harmless? Or the billions of doses of harder-on-you but easier-to-get prescription drugs - often paid for using unwilling others’ money in this case?

Is playing video games 12hrs a day harmful? Probably. But none of my business if someone wants to do it.

Is being a fat lazy bastard harmful. No doubt. But, again, none of my business.

The irony to me is that so many here seem to think pot is strictly consumed by liberals, affecting common sense and discipline. While I won’t argue against those claims in general, it seems like simply mentioning pot causes the equally undesirable symptom of making so-called conservatives into govt-is-the-answer types. And not just any govt, FEDERAL govt.

So, apparently:
— smoking pot makes liberals dumber.
and
— talking about pot makes conservatives more liberal.

I’m not as good at reading smoke signals as when I was young, but it seems like consensus is coming eventually.

Why is 4/20 a “holiday”?

Curious how many here have used pot themselves or have been around “habitual” users.

My anecdotal evidence is that habitual pot smokers are by far less obnoxious and unpleasant to be around than habitual drinkers.

I have never personally seen anyone so high on pot that they passed out and puked all over themselves and had to be monitored to make sure they didn’t choke on their own vomit like I have with some habitual drunks.

almost nobody makes their decision about whether to smoke pot or not based on whether they can do it legally.

Even worse, many DO make their decision about whether to SELL pot or not based on whether they can do it legally. So criminalization of pot does little to reduce demand, while putting supply and profit in the hands of violent criminals.

The number 420 is Internet slang for Marijuana.

Pot also helped me during Obama’s tenure not to be nauseous.

Leagalize that $hit all you want.

1984 is truly here.

The more addle-brained idiots we have in America, the better for those who remain sane and highly motivated.

The not quite sharp knives in the drawer? Good luck to those puff and huff retards. They will need it.

By ignoring God we have fomented the demand for strange inordinate vain use of things. It is sorcery.

What, sorcery?

Yes, sorcery. It fills a God vacuum in a place with would-be mores of godliness.

No ban will ever stop that. It may be better to let addictions be obvious so that doctors and preachers will know whom to address.

Right, but unfortunately, so far at least, legalization has not put the criminals out of business. One law enforcement effort that I would support would be drawing a brighter line between legal and illegal growers, as I understand that illegally grown pot is still making its way into legal sales channels. That needs to stop.

Everybody needs God. The “huff and puff retards” may only be a little more honest about it than you. Selfaholism is never scandalous in our society.

I am against criminality, and am fine with people doing the occasional recreational (I love my yearly stroll in the desert with fungus), but my observation with pot is unlike people I know who drink way too much, they are generally not drunk all day, where pot smokers that I know from 20 to 60 deadhead types to engineers to doctors to kids, generally smoke with the frequency that cigarette smokers do, and are almost incapable of functioning without it (I can totally tell the difference when they havent had a hit in a while), so I think it is a wee bit different. I do not think its healthy physically or mentally to smoke pot frequently every day.

The feds authority is superseded by the states except in interstate commerce. So the reference you make to what the feds can do is unconstitutional.

“So we should ban alcohol?”

No. Drinking alcohol does not necessarily lead to intoxication. Smoking pot leads to intoxication. That’s the only reason to use marijuana for “recreational” purposes.

Sobriety is part and parcel of exercising responsibility. Rights without Responsibility just leads to moral collapse.

There are plenty of things people argue should not be done because they are dangerous and/or immoral - use marijuana, use alcohol, eat unhealthy foods, gamble, hunt animals, engage in risky sex, sit around watching TV, etc.

The question is whether Big Government should be involved. That is where we differ.

So then you would be OK with outlawing the consumption of alcohol once it leads to the point of intoxication, right?
