If you are a veteran, check USAA.

I am not so sure anymore.

I have had USAA since I became an officer in 1984. Had both home and auto insurance since then. In 2013 I made my first auto claim when someone hit my vehicle in a parking lot and drove off (about $5000 in damage). A month ago we had a hail storm that damaged our roof so I made our first ever claim against our home insurance. The lowest estimate is about $25 with all the roof and window screen damage. I just got a call today that they were cutting us a check for $12K.

In my ten-home neighborhood nine of us are either retired military or still active duty, all have USAA and we all had significant hail damage. Only one of us got enough money from them to fix his roof.

This isn’t new. I had State Farm 30 years ago. Every 6 mos like clockwork the premium went up. I switched to GEICO.

Never filled a home claim with them, but have never had any kind of issue with auto claims (glass coverage, uninsured motorist, etc).

Good advice. I switched to “People’s Trust” and saved a few thousand a yeas - AND they covered my pool cage. Looking around IS the answer.

Our financial planner says change insurance carriers every three years.

...

I have a feeling that’s very good advice. I think they know when somebody’s been a customer for a while they are likely locked in and they’ll raise rates at every renewal.

I think almost every lawyer offers a free initial consultation.
