The Target boycott cost more than anyone expected — and the CEO was blindsided

The boycott cost the company millions in lost sales and added expenses. Shopper traffic and same-store sales started sliding for the first time in years after the blog post, and the company was forced to spend $20 million installing single-occupancy bathrooms in all its stores to give critics of the policy more privacy.

Critics of the policy said it opened the door for sexual predators to victimize women and children inside the retailer's bathrooms, and more than 1.4 million people signed a pledge to stop shopping at Target unless it reversed the policy.

Sales fell nearly 6% in the three quarters after the post compared with the same period last year, and same-store sales have dropped every quarter since the post.

From article,
“In the past, even the most widespread calls for company boycotts have tended to blow over within a matter of weeks or months.

Chick-fil-A, for example, faced a nationwide boycott in 2012 after Dan Cathy, the son of Chick-fil-A’s founder, S. Truett Cathy, set off a fury among supporters of equal rights for gay people when he told Baptist Press that the company was “guilty as charged” for backing “the biblical definition of the family unit.”

Reports then emerged detailing Chick-fil-A’s many charitable donations to organizations opposed to same-sex marriage.

Despite the backlash, Chick-fil-A’s sales increased 14% in 2012.”

Hmmmmm. Wonder why the result for Chick-fil-A was different?

The solution is soooooo simple. Single stall bathrooms. I've never see a line in any store.

The there's the old rule....Go to the bathroom before you leave home. It was the "law" in our house.

A happy ending except for Target employees.

"Happy Endings" and "Transgendered Bathrooms" are EXACTLY the image Target was trying to portray to 0.2% of its customers.

Too bad about 20-30% disagree with it entirely.

Our family stopped. We don’t even notice it now.

Not that I like Walmart, but I don’t have to worry about a guy in the girls bathroom.

I've spent my life fighting for things like individual liberty, constitutional principles, America's interests abroad; I've fought against terror, I've fought to protect children and lift people out of poverty, I've fought for literacy...

My liberal friends have spent their lives fighting about where we pee.

Target CEO Brian Cornell never approved the post and found out about it only after it was published, according to The Wall Street Journal.

IIRC, the CEO doubled-down when questioned about the policy.

Furthermore, they’ve lost my credit card business. A false scheme charged unwanted goods on my Target credit card when I’d only agreed to use it for shipping charges for a “free” gift. Although I notified them immediately, Target refused to issue me a refund, except for one month. (3 months had charged before I was ever notified.) It amounted to about $250. I haven’t used that card since. I’m about to return its cut up pieces to their CEO. (It is really difficult to get an address for their headquarters.)

Despite all my pleading and complaints, they flatly refused. I even used their lousy bathroom policy and the fact that their cc numbers were part of a huge identity theft scheme in the past couple of years as arguments as to why they should remove the charges. I should mention that whenever there has been any question as to charges on any of my credit cards, other companies have removed the disputed charges immediately, so Target’s refusal was an unpleasant surprise.

Homosexuals are such a small minority in our society you have to wonder how is it in just 60 years it went from being a mental disorder to a protected class?

I think the reason is that the homosexual community got smart and figured out that they do not have to convince the majority but simply work their way up to the point where they are in charge of many of our political, social, educational and entertainment institutions.

This way a small minority can influence our nation.

The fact that many oppose them does not matter since they control the debate.

I look at the old Soviet Union where the full power of the state up to and including mass murder of those that opposed communism in the end failed, this current shift in our cultural will also fail.

Homosexuals won the right to be left alone a long time ago, but their desire to force not only acceptance but admiration for their path in life will be their downfall.

When it does, many will wish they were back in the closet and not out in public records.

But then, this is just my opinion.

:^)

The CEO is an Idiot

Target is (was) a family store, with family values
One just doesn’t alienate
a large portion of your clients without consequences

My theory on all gender rest rooms is that women are RESENTFUL because they always have to deal with a line, while the men almost never do. A number of times I’ve felt downright sorry for women because their restroom line was ridiculous while the men just breezed in and out.

That’s completely stupid.

No mention that the REAL backlash was FOR CFA and against the f-ags, on August 1. And obviously that made more people aware and THEY voted with their feet - TOWARD CFA.

If the CEO was "blindsided", then he is a moron and should NEVER have been CEO. Same goes for Starbucks.

And the Salvation Army Christmas bell ringers are no longer welcome there. Another bad move on Target’s part.

You remember correctly.

IIRC, his statement on it was, "If you disagree with me, you're an inbred, bible-thumping troglodyte.", approximately.

Well, maybe not quite that, but the level of arrogance was certainly there. I've no idea how he's still employed, unless the Board either:

- agrees with him.

- can't fire him because they don't want to admit their mistake.

I suppose it could be both. Meanwhile, I've made sure that I don't own their stock. Thankfully, since it's down over a third on the year.
