WASHINGTON U.S. warships launched dozens of cruise missiles against a Syrian government-controlled air base Thursday in a major retaliatory strike against Syrian president Bashar Assad for chemical attacks against scores of civilians earlier this week.
The missiles were launched by the Rota, Spain-based U.S. guided missile destroyers USS Ross and USS Porter from the Mediterranean Sea and were programmed to hit aircraft shelters, ammunition storage sites, radar sites, aircraft and fuel sites at Shayrat Air Base. That base is where Assad regime military aircraft that carried out the chemical strike launched from, President Donald Trump said in an address to the nation Thursday night.
Tonight I ordered a targeted military strike on the airfield in Syria from where the chemical attack was launched, he said. It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.
More than 60 Tomahawk cruise missiles struck the air base in a rural area about 25 miles south of Homs about 8:45 p.m. Eastern time.
A Navy official who asked not to be identified said the ships were in the best position to strike. "Our forward-deployed ships give us the ability to rapidly respond to contingencies. I believe the current situation in Syria is a great example of that -- this is why we're there."
Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters late Thursday that the U.S. military had conducted multiple phone calls with Russia over the "deconfliction" line to warn them in advance of the impending launch. Russia also operates from the base.

Muslims are told to go and conquer the lands they go to.
I get the feeling that this is going to lead to disaster.

I am very disappointed in Trump getting more involved over there.
I am still not convinced it was the Syrian Government that did the chemical weapons attack. Assad was winning big-time and there should have been no motivation for them to use chemical weapons.
trump gets and believes intelligence from same agencies generating "golden shower report"
Could be. We’ll find out.
Perhaps it was just a shot into the bow to get Korea’s attention. This was Mad Dog’s attack.
Are you sure that’s not limited to the embedded terrorists among them?
I hope President Trump and those around him know what the hell they’re doing, because I can’t see this leading anywhere good for anybody, least of all us. Got a bad feeling about this.

Trump said.......Tonight I ordered a targeted military strike on the airfield in Syria from where the chemical attack was launched, ..... It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.
He was quite specific about why he did this. He also touched on bringing all parties to the table again...and this has just set the stage for that as well.
IMO Russia and Trump are on the same page regarding putting this war in Syria to an end. How that equation works out has ‘new hope’ because every time all the parties there had an agreement ‘it was Obama and Kerry’ who would not agree....and the war continued.
Russia won’t do crap. They respect strength and use weakness to their advantage.
We won’t get Russia to do anything if we don’t convince them we mean business.
Reagan didn’t end the cold war by letting the Russians roll him.
Bray..Interesting Trump was having dinner with China’s Xi at the time....I think since the push has been on China to do ‘more’ about N.Korea Xi just got the message if he doesn’t...Then Trump is not afraid to do it...and China doesn’t want to see a mad dash over his borders of North Koreans should that happen.
Why did Hilary say call for bombing of Syria hours before President Trump bombed Syria? What intel do they have?

Here’s the statement that Cruz put out. For you Cruzers out there.
- - - - -
“U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) issued the following statement:
Today, after eight years of Obama foreign policy failures, Syria is a humanitarian disaster. Bashar al-Assad is a monster, a puppet of Russia and Iran, and he has once again used chemical weapons against his own citizens, murdering innocent men, women, and children.
Our prayers are with Assads victims, and with the victims of the ISIS and al Qaeda terrorists ripping Syria apart. And, as always, our support and prayers are with the brave Americans in uniform who carried out the military strike tonight.
Any military action in Syria must be justified as protecting the vital national security interests of America including decisive action to prevent chemical weapons from falling into the hands of radical Islamic terrorists and I look forward to our Commander-in-Chief making the case to Congress and the American people how we should do so in the days ahead.”

Ted looks forward to it, and he doesn’t care much for “the monster” Assad.
Frist. A good many of those are not Syrian. They are from North Africa, Afghanistan, and other places. They used Syria as an excuse to migrate to the EU...and here.
Second. ISIS got hold of the ability to print out passports and used it to flood other countries with subversives. They salted them in with the masses.
Until this POTUS, this country did absolutely nothing to stop that invasion. Yet we have judges in this country who continue to allow that invasion...until today when the senate used the proper rules to get a SCOTUS nominee in that will allow for the proper ruling on the law that allows for the POTUS to stop the invasion.
That is why what happened in the Senate was so important today.
I try to stay positive and not freak out.
The majority of the ‘refugees’ had nothing when they left but old windowless earthen buildings, sand, cheap western clothing, a rug and a cell phone. No reason they can’t go back to it. Europe might want to keep them as crazy as they are. I have no doubt that our President won’t hesitate to send them packing here.
I’m not going to pretend to know much about foreign policy in the M.E. and I can’t even play regular chess, never mind 4D but I’ve got as good a chance as a lot of the other 1000 opinions tonight. Everything from MAGA to Impeachment Forthcoming. I damn sure don’t know as much as the President, Vice President, two ex-Generals, Tillerson and probably Bannon. Some people evidently do though.
For what it’s worth, which ain’t much, the UN refugee website says the plan is for the refugees to go home at some point. They’ve been in charge of the shuffling around of them so there’s a talking point for the President when/if the time comes.
If we don’t get involved in something long term, including rebuilding things over there, I’m good.
And the whole MSM is going to make hypocrites of themselves attacking this move because they’re goddess, Hillary, just suggested doing this very thing. 4D
Yeah. Get ready for WWIII.
In 2013 Trump tweeted one tweet after another saying bombing Syria was a mistake, that we should stay out of it et cetera, that ISIS was the real enemy.
While this Tomahawk strike was going on ISIS launched an offensive near Homa.
If he meant all of this then, and last year, why didn’t the missiles target ISIS? If we’re going to wave the bloody shirt as proof of causa belli, these are the savages drowning groups of people in cages, decapitating children, et cetera.
And Russia and Assad have been putting the wood to them.
In what alternate universe does it make sense to help your enemies and hurt those who share your goals?
Are there any FR navy types that cam translate the message in the four signal flags shown flying from the “mast” of the warship launching missiles?
So do I. I'm sure other things will take center stage from Syria in a little while. Gorsuch gets confirmed tomorrow. Some just like to bi%!ch here 24/7.
