Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., bemoaned the state of the Senate on Thursday as Majority Leader Mitch McConnell moved to change the chambers rules in order to break through the Democratic filibuster of Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch with a simple majority. Earlier in the day, Republicans failed to reach the 60-vote supermajority needed to end debate and proceed to a vote.
Its a bad day for democracy, McCain said before entering the Senate chamber, where he later voted with fellow Republicans to change the rules. I think its a terrible mistake that we will regret for many, many years to come.
McCain called the rule-change a slippery slope that will clearly lead to more extreme appointments for both sides and could embolden senators to change the rules for considering legislation, too.
We went from judges, to [a] Supreme Court justice, McCain said. Whats next?
McConnell has said he would not change the Senate rules for legislation.

But a good day for the Republic and Republicanism.
The United States of America is a republic not a democracy, Songbird!
Calm down, here’s your drool cup.
The Constitution, in establishing all three branches of government, originally only provided for democratic election of the House (which, along with the Senate, actually has the ability to refuse to seat elected members). The Senate was appointed by the states, the President was/is elected by the electoral college (which we just saw with the democrat silliness in November and December is not required to vote for the winner of the popular vote), and the SCOTUS is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.
Just using that framework, out of the five procedures used to put people in the four offices (SCOTUS has two separate procedures), only one was democratic. Add in the fact that the House must face reelection every two years while Senators sit for six years, the founders appear to have deeply distrusted democracy. And with good reason - the mob is both fickle and stupid.
The constant push for democratizing the fedgov since the 17th Amendment is very dangerous from an historical perspective, even if I happen to like the fact that Justice Gorsuch will be on the court. Democracies devolve as the pols cater to the mob without any incentive to plan or act for the future or the common good of the country.
Now if he was arguing that this was a problem for a constitutionally limited republic he might have a point. If he was arguing that the traditions and comity of the Senate was at risk he might have a point. He might even have a point if he said the Dems would be angry and vengeful for the next time they get a majority. But pure democracy won today.
Since we are a Republic and not a democracy, what are you talking about?
Why doesn’t McInSane just change parties already?
He’s been a loyal democrat for years.

Wow, what a man of conviction. Way to stand your ground there McFeeble. Must have been kicking and screaming along the way.
Can’t this joker stroke-out?? I really don’t want to see him live up to the, “....for many years to come.” ‘I told you so’.
I’d prefer he just come to a complete end. Perhaps when he is deceased he can see what a horse’s rear end he is.
Any day McCain speaks as a member of the US senate, Its a bad day for democracy
He needs to go! As much a “good” example for term limits as any Democrat.
By the way: today on twitter he and Graham are pushing for “action” in Syria. They are globalist deceiving pcs of ....
LOL!
>>McCain said. Whats next?

Handcuffs for traitorous Senators.
What a maverick.
Every tool must be used to fight the democrats who use every dirty trick in the book and some.
This whole filibuster thing pisses me off. There is a reason to try to win the majority of seats in the Senate. The filibuster allows the minority party to stop the majority party policies.
They should bury the filibuster for good.
Another “bad day for democracy” was the day McCain became a senator. Somehow Congress critters are like barnacles. Once they latch on it’s extremely difficult to get rid of them.
Hey! John McCrazy!
Was the action by the Republicans legal? Answer: you bet your ass it was!
Get over it.
