"Unlawful" and "extreme" is how West Michigan Rep. Justin Amash described President Donald Trump's executive order to ban refugees and citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries.
"It's not lawful to ban immigrants on the basis of nationality," Amash said in the statement.
Trump's order blocks citizens from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia and Libya from entering the country for at least 90 days. It also bans refugees from anywhere in the world for 120 days -- and from Syria indefinitely.
"Ultimately, the executive order appears to be more about politics than safety," Amash said. "If the concern is radicalism and terrorism, then what about Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and others?"
Unlike many Republicans who endorsed Trump when he secured the GOP nomination, Amash never formally gave the candidate his support. He said he would neither vote for Trump nor Hillary Clinton, and would remain critical of Trump's decisions in office.

Push polls can accomplish almost any result. A poll can easily get a 17% approval that asks some form of: Do you approve or disapprove of the controversial Republican health care bill that will cause 24 million Americans to lose their health insurance? Heck, even the questioner’s tone can influence results and of course the other questions they ask in the same survey. Its amusing to see so many Freepers who normally attack polls as fake and manipulative throwing around that 17% number. I doubt 17% of Americans even knew what was in the plan.
There are not enough members of FC to “have made Ryan speaker” the whole Congress made a poor choice not just this one group.
Mark Meadows is a wonderful man so not all are like Amash. Likely many of Amash constituents are Muslim so his questionable stand is wrong but has a basis that most in FC don’t face.
Aside from all other dumb issues with Ryancare it did not open insurance across state lines as promised. If insurance premiums which are already unaffordable to many increased for 2 years, the Dems would take over in 2018. Ryancare needed to die.
You’re silly. Calling the FC “a bunch of frauds” is totally different from “pointing out shortcomings.”
Pointing out fallacies is never silly except to those spewing them.
SOME in the FC ARE frauds. Pointing that out is as valid an exercise as pointing out a Trump mistake.
Do you dismiss the FC as a bunch of frauds? Do you embrace those whom they oppose?
If it weren’t for the FC, who would we have representing the more conservative/Constitutional/reasonable side of politics?
Without the Freedom Caucus, John Boehner would still be Speaker. Don’t people remember how Boehner was forced out? Those who don’t know should look it up.
Even Al Jeezeera recognizes that fact.
1) President Chester A. Arthur banned Chinese immigrants in 1882.
2) President Franklin D. Roosevelt banned Jewish immigrants in 1939 during WWII,
3) President Theodore Roosevelt banned anarchists and others deemed to be political extremists in 1903
4) Communist were banned by Congress in 1950, despite being vetoed by President Harry Truman
5) President Jimmy Carter banned Iranians in 1980
6) President Ronald Reagan banned HIV positive persons in 1987
So the President has the power to ban people by multiple criteria, which includes, but is not limited to, nationality. Even Congress has the power to enact bans if they have the votes to override a Presidential veto.
Is he part of the “Freedom Caucus”???
That's why your COBRA went down
Bad enough
But it is a door to govt controlled single payer healthcare
A crucible no no for anyone to the right of Schumer...... Cobra exists for when the employer no longer pays half or all for an employee
I'm self employed forever...before Obama mine cost 388/mo for regular policy with no dental and drugs 1000 per person deductible
Now it 900/mo
Why?
so my money goes to help folks like you on COBRA ..I was ok before trust me
when I was young you had county hospitals and healthcare for indigent and some charity hospitals and all medical insurance was major medical
and it worked
Wow, what a set of ridiculous questions. It’s like reading a Jake Tapper transcript.
I embrace what’s best for America. Not what’s best for a caucus or political party. I’m for pro America ACTIONS. Deeds, not words.
The multiple factions in the GOP assure nothing truly pro-America will ever be advanced & enacted into law & we will never return to the Constitution. Supporting one faction over another helps to assure this nightmare continues.
Not ridiculous at all.
You either oppose Obamacare, as the FC “faction” does, or you embrace Obamacare, as pretty much everyone else does.
I side with JR in opposing Obamacare. The FC is the body opposing Obamacare, and I support their efforts to repeal it.
Do you support Obamacare? If not, how do you see it becoming repealed without the FC?
More disordered writing with false choices added.
I am 100% against Ocrapcare & also against the way the FC handled the issue to this point. Like a Obama/Pelosi acolyte you set up a false choice.
The majority of the FC is no different from the rest of the swamp. They talk talk talk & accomplish NOTHING. Well they backed Lyin Ryan. What an accomplishment. /s
As for the rest, blow it out your back door. Your use of progressive fallacies disgust me.
I don’t think he is muslim.
I respect that. You have been consistent and respectful.
You were right about trade when the prevailing winds on FR were against you.
There are so many bad things about Obamacare I would just as soon it all goes away. I am not opposed to some type of Medicaid for the truly needy, but it must be for the truly needy and not just for the lazy.
Get a grip. I have two issues where I think Trump is wrong.
I will not mindlessly cheerlead our way to socialism.
Or amnesty.
I don’t know the other Freedom Caucus members, but I know Dave Brat and am thrilled to be rid of the weasel Eric Cantor.
If we had not gotten rid of him in June 2014 the Uniparty weasels you are siding with would have passed Rubio’s amnesty as planned to clear the way for Yeb! and there would be no President Trump.
“Like a Obama/Pelosi acolyte ...”
You’re an ass. Note to self: Don’t waste time with TheStickman.
Never thought I would see the day that there would be a groundswell of support for eliminating conservatives from Congress on Free Republic.
Someone should stuff the Constitution down his throat so he can choke on it. He might learn what it says!
Sucks to be exposed, doesn’t it?
